Good movie.

There's plenty out there, just not big budget blockbuster stuff.
But more so, it's a rare movie/show where it's a team of people cooperating to achieve a goal.
Literally every other show/movie always has to include all sorts of backstabbing, mutiny, and twenty other subversive subplots that slow down the plot.
This was just people cooperating in a realistic manner to achieve a goal.

everything in that movie was badass. the kid officer losing his arm and not bitching about it, then having to sew up his friend in the bodybag at the end really hit me hard. and the guy who jumped into the ocean because he thought he was cursing the crew. the doctor operating on himself, the officers taking responsibility for the tough decisions, and how everyone worked and fought together even if they were at odds with each other sometimes.

incidentally my sister's ex-husband was an extra in the movie. he was one of the ones laughing at the "lesser of two weevils" joke.

I unironically want to use picrel as basis for liveaboard yacht.

Just mod the interior a bit for 6'6" headroom.

Deck is almost 20' so you could park a car for RORO at dock.

I like the way the fore and aft super structures are separated by the main deck.

Use sails and "yards" for tent or even tramp for extra space.

Do it in strips of 1/4" or 1/8" welded steel.

Worst case the original was able to sail around the world in all sorts of weather.

Boats spend 98% of their time docked or at anchor, so "floating condo" is actually good.

Never heard of it, but might be worth checking out since it's a Vincent Gallo movie. He made some weird off-beat indie shit that was kino.

Does she get naked? Says Ricci was 17 when it was filmed, and even way back then under 18 nudity was getting rare in movies.

How did Vincent Gallo get all those Hollywood girls to do raunchy shit in movies?

"Cunningham became famous for the invention of the self-reefing topsail, which he manufactured in the Gosport Foundry at The Green. The agent for this invention was William Henry Lapthorn, sail maker, ship chandler, of 29 Broad Street Portsmouth. The self reefing topsail was exhibited in a model of a fully-rigged ship at the Great Exhibition in 1862, amongst the section on Naval architecture and Admiralty models. “They roll up like common blinds, and almost entirely obviate the necessity of sending men aloft.” In the 1862 International Exhibition Cunningham was both a medallist and juror."

Clipper Rigs https://doriccolumns.wordpress.com/industry/shipbuilding/clipper-ships/clipper-plans/clipper-rigs/

The only reason the dynarig is so fancy is they went the extra mile and used CURVED yards for top performance.

The DynaRig is an advanced, high-performance square-rigged sailing system designed for large yachts and vessels, featuring free-standing, rotating masts with rigid, curved yards. Developed from a 1960s concept by Wilhelm Prölß, it enables rapid sail deployment and efficient wind propulsion, famously used on yachts like the Maltese Falcon and Black Pearl.

Main reason olde ships had such big crews is so they'd still be able to fight and win after 1/2 the crew was slaughtered.

Only about 1/6 of the crew would be real sailors tasked with working the sails and climbing rigging, and really more like 1/12 "real sailors" with the rest trainee sailors and assistants.

I wish the kept it like that. The movie The Patriot already tested my brain when I saw it as a kid. It confused the hell out of me and I was even asking my parents 'why are the British killing the Americans'
The portrayal of the English in The Patriot always sat wrong with me and if Master and Commander was true to war they fought it would have made it such a better film to revisit.

>I unironically want to use picrel as basis for liveaboard yacht.

bad idea man. its 1500s tech. dont get me wrong, the portugeuse sailed around the world in these things (caravels). they are tough little boats. However much better tech existed by 1830. You really dont want protusions above your deck, its a big aerodynamic drag.

You have to bear in mind that the men who sailed these ships 400 years ago were incredibly tough and resourceful, the words "fear" and "pain" were not in thier vocabulary.

You should look into "clipper" designs of early 1900s for the pinnacle of old time sailing ships. If you want something older, look at English designs of early 19th century. The English really changed the game. By 1830 we start to see alot more iron being used in construction, as well as the first steam powered designs. The modern screw was invented (i think, without a reference book) around 1834 in Austria, but didnt really catch on for 20 years. The earliest steam design was an american inventor, who died broke, because everyone thought he was crazy. The first "all iron" boat was a scottish design, that crossed the channel, and worked as a riverboat in france, around 1830. Im just goin off the top of my head here.

1830 is when the magic started to happen. Its funny, because the experiments in created high pressure steam vessels, translated quickly into methods for rivetting iron plates on hulls. The English had already pinoneered using iron for many structural components (mainly because they had deforested Britain building ships!) .. so neccesity drove them to using iron. But there was alot of problems with early iron, brittle, and expanded and contracted, it rusts, hard to work and expensive. By 1850 though many of the challenges had been overcome, and the age of sail was ending.

Its weird in a way, because just as the age of sail was reaching it technical pinnacle, the age of the screw had begun.

The young officer that grabbed the cannonball then jumped in..... I think about this a lot. There would be so many ways to kill yourself and he takes the most self-less way. Doesn't leave behind a mess. Doesn't burden the crew. But imagine the stones it would take to do that. In the middle of nowhere at the edge of the world. Jumping into water no one has ever been in and lived.... Doing so at night and the method of death being literally dragging you into the dark abyss before you choke on the salty water ....

I'm not afraid to die. Not looking forward to it or anything but not worried about the afterlife. Still
There aren't many things that terrify me more
