its a photonic processing unit, capable of directly computing complex values without the need to shift them down to real values, thus making it way more efficient and it wastes way less energy as heat reducing the need for cooling

what do you mean what do I mean? Jesus Christ grant me patience....

it means your CPU cannot compute complex numbers it must calculate them as floats rational values. To calculate a complex multiplication the CPU need to do 6 operations instead of 1. But an NPU does compute complex numbers as complex, it doesnt have regular logic gates that require linear values, its logic is complex by nature because light is complex

I thought photonic cpu's changed the topography of chip itself, that is why its more efficient. This shifting numbers shit sounds like imbedded software reaches and work arounds. I remember when we invested in these like 2 years ago. Never thought they would actually make them. Pulled out of the market since then.

so it can do equivalents to 16-bit operations in analogue... but then it surely has to digitise on both sides of that computation: variables in, result out? it's not full photonic, but hybrid
and does aliasing occur during that conversion? i.e. are there precision tradeoffs?
and whilst one 'optical element' can apparently do the job of "1,200 transistors", why is this card then only rated at 8 GOPS? that's a metric for integer operations, no? why extol that over floating point if the card is to be used for AI? and it's a tiny amount of work, this thing is outclassed by a desktop CPU
it must have a small number of these 'optical elements' -- is that a factor of cost, or difficulty in fabrication?

photonic computing is obviously one of the paths we might go down towards future computing, but this really indicates to me it's too nascent a technology
>energy efficient
>super low power
great, but I want to see Moore's law continue, not compute jumping off of a cliff in the name of a suicidal green agenda

>>
>i qant qompute

On a serious note though... This idea leans into my general thought on the datacenter, rampacolypse, gpu shortage type shit. People were freaking out about all the datacenters buying up the current tech.. Obviously if ram prices spike by hundreds of dollars, someone will see that, and see a plan develop and they'll fill the supply gaps.

Likewise w\ general processing.. We saw this with Bitcoin. Everyone was buying all the GPUS. And then people started creating ASIC units that blew GPU processing out of the water. Why would you buy 10 $500 GPUs if you can just buy a single ASIC unit that has the same processing power, uses less electricity, and is smaller form factor?

In 2-3 years we will probalby have a massive boom of "used" 2024-25 generation computer equipment. You'll be able to get a 2025 lvl gaming computer for $500.

there is a digital to optical conversion taking place either side, because it's only an accelerator; it's dependent on a conventional x86 processor architecture to feed it work, and to receive the results, and do additional work which can't be done in optical
they're hybrid in the sense that they're not a fully-optical system, do you see what I mean?
this is optical acceleration, and ostensibly very slow 'acceleration', if they're putting "8 GOPS" first-and-foremost in their marketing fluff
I'm not quite understanding the vision, or why you're so excited

>its happening and according to them this will accelerate Moore's law
one would hope we achieve mass optical computing as a species, or home quantum, or bioengineered machines we top-up with cerebrospinal fluid, or any one of the other paradigms which doesn't equate to shoving more silicon in, allowing us to keep progressing
but that's not this card; this isn't that
unless I'm misunderstanding, this is a toy (admittedly a very cool toy, but it doesn't seem powerful enough to be useful over standard silicon GPGPU)

everything in the real world is represented in complex and hypercomplex values, electromagnetic waves seismic waves etc protein analysis and even DNA can be seen as a wave....

and LLMs for example already work with high vectorial dimensions, so right now we have to compute everything linearly and dimension up and then down again. Dimension up dimension down for everything

if we can rise the "dimensional floor” from 1d linear 101s to 2d (complex photonic logic) it will make everything faster and cheaper

in the end one can envision all integrated circuits becoming photonic and all compute becoming photonic, because in the end be cameras, radiowaves, whatever if you can have complex in and complex out, all of our compute applications will be closer to reality in an intrinsic sense

>if my car was made of sunlight it wouldnt need gas!!111!1
Thats equally as dumb as your post.
Moving a photon from a source to a receptor that then has to again convert that to an electrical signal is a fundamentally inefficient process. We turn photons into electrons. Moving electrons is less wasteful. Photonics only has a useful niche in high BW signaling because channels can scale without loss of signal integrity leading to super high bandwidths.
>>
>>535832738
You want to do that conversion only when necessary, with all the necessary photonic components you end up with a computer that does such conversions only mainly at its interfaces. Even this early accelerator card seems to claim significant cooling requirement reductions, even though it probably is doing such conversions at non-ideal rates.

what I'm curious about is why YOU'RE excited about this particular, seemingly underperforming exotic card
the tech is clearly not there yet
this one is being brought to market, but even their marketing fluff has an undertone of "look where it might get to in the future"
indeed, in the future; you seem to think it's something notable now, and I'm just not seeing... why

I just asked you to explain, and you linked the brochure, which didn't explain why you're so excited
you've mentioned it has an ability to do native operations on 2-component vectors—is that something we can't do with AVX, or SIMD on GPGPU? or do you just find it cool that it's happening in analogue?

You’re functional but retarded and incapable of understanding anything you weren’t programmed to understand in excruciating narrow context. I plead with you to stop being a brown tier “engineer”.

AMD's and Intel's physical cores are quite literally vastly different. Their data fabrics are vastly different, front end, band end, execution ports, FPU arrangements, ALU/AGUs, all vastly different. You don't know anything about any of these things so you foolishly and brazenly make these idiotic statements without shame which further highlights how dumb you are. You're a floundering nigger retard just grasping at straws and you'll continue to do this for the rest of your miserable poopskinned life.

Are you fucking drunk or just a belligerent dumb ass?

For those wondering why photonics is better than electronics for AI chips:

Your typical gpu has transistors, which are basically voltage controlled switches (can be current controlled too) that can also amplify a signal. Transistors are the bedrock of computing. You do math and SRAM storage with transistors.

But transistors generate a lot of heat. Essentially a transistor is made up of a semiconductor, which conducts current if certain requirements are met. But it's not a conductor, as it's usually resistive as the name suggest. Semiconductors are not metal, they generate a lot of heat when operating.

Photonics are completely different. Instead of applying voltage across a device (transistor) to decide if it's on or off, you're using modulated light to carry information. There aren't any transistors involve, however there are photodiodes at the END of the all the computation to communicate with your traditional electronics. There's nothing really resistive to generate heat when light passes through the various components. It's all mirrors, modulators and optical fibers.

Ehrm, if we get some tech breakthrough that makes all our current data centers obsolete didn't we just pump like 5 trillion dollars into doing literally nothing?

Yet they literally run the same fucking software with near identical end results across a narrow tier of products and architecture. This is genuinely enlightening and everyone reading this can see where narrow focus engineering analysis gets you.

Grew up rural poor, turned 18 in 2008. Couldn't afford a car, had to walk for hours to retail and fast food jobs. Couldn't get better jobs or a place to live. Ended up homeless. Ended up with a criminal record because I had to have room mates who turned out to be criminals and threw me under the bus. Ended up in massive debt. It's incredibly obvious to me how Cash for Clunkers in particular kept me in poverty.

In general, if φ is a holomorphic function whose restriction to the real numbers is real-valued, and φ (z) and φ (z¯) are defined, then φ (z¯) = φ (z)¯. The map σ(z) = z¯ from C to C is a homeomorphism (where the topology on C is taken to be the standard topology) and antilinear, if one considers C as a complex vector space over itself. Even though it appears to be a well-behaved function, it is not holomorphic; it reverses orientation whereas holomorphic functions locally preserve orientation. It is bijective and compatible with the arithmetical operations, and hence is a field automorphism. As it keeps the real numbers fixed, it is an element of the Galois group of the field extension C / R. This Galois group has only two elements: σ and the identity on C. Thus the only two field automorphisms of C that leave the real numbers fixed are the identity map and complex conjugation.

At its core, a Galois group describes the symmetries of the roots of a polynomial, which helps mathematicians and cryptographers understand finite fields. Researchers build photonic-electronic hybrid chips (like photonic polynomial multipliers) to process Galois field multiplications using optical interference. Because light travels as a continuous wave without friction or heat generation, these optical processors can compute the required polynomial arithmetic exponentially faster than purely electronic logic gates.

In photonic quantum computing, the information itself is encoded in different properties (polarization, phase, or wavelength) of the photon. The quantum gates used to manipulate these photons map directly to linear algebra and field extensions described by abstract algebra and Galois theory. From the other direction, researchers are utilizing modern high-performance computational hardware to classify Galois groups and solve complex polynomials, vastly streamlining the process of determining polynomial solvability.

how can you exclude real numbers?

Instruction set support does not make them identical, you nigger retard, the physical implementations of one specific instruction are very different, which is why every single X86 core has different errata related to the same features
Stop embarrassing yourself. Its pathetic. You cannot keep up.

>photonic processing unit
They're used to greatly accelerate workloads by offloading matrix multiplication calculations and are able to mutliplex "spit" a single light channel allowing for massive bandwidth. They are data accelerators, not data processers and still require traditional GPU/CPU support but it's not unheard of for a unit to offer 1TBps / 65 T.FLOPS @ 75watts which is highly attractive for AI and signals processing workloads

These are not GPU's nor are they CPU's and cannot perform the types of workloads associated with traditional processing they are for HPC only

Repeating numbers were indeed used to create the universe. Turns out prime quarters is actually just number precession.

Can you measure a coastline from there? As long as you don't shift the frame of reference, you can increase the scale of resolution. Stop searching for them, and start looking for them.
