The Holocaust was when German troops (mostly SS) killed around 1.1 million Jewish civilians in occupied territories during Operation Barbarossa. They rounded them up and shot them to death as "partisans," as Himmler and Goebbels explicitly state and allude to (respectively) in their diaries; the thought being that these Jews will just become active rebellious force sooner or later so just take them out at once with the chaos of war as the justification.This stopped when Barbarossa was stopped, and so then the Germans began to round Jews up into larger ghettos and work camps to prepare for fighting a longer war than they were ready for. There was no mass industrial executions from gassings and cremations, just disease/supply problems causing deaths in the crowded conditions.
