Where the Jews come from is that when Christianity (and later Islam) became a state religion they needed someone to do banking and commerce that they could keep under their thumbs, because if those groups gather too much wealth they can pose a challenge to the state authorities themselves. "The Jews" fit the role perfectly because they could be sort of grandfathered into Christendom / the Caliphate as a demographic by virtue of appearing in their holy books, thus earning an exemption from the otherwise totalizing writ of these semi-theocracies, but in such a way that they were still second class citizens, so if they got too big for their britches they could always be expelled or have their wealth seized.
