>>535923678I can only assume that Putin felt threatened by Ukraine's slide towards alignment with the EU and the west, so he decided to launch an invasion to topple the government and turn it into a puppet/client state like Belarus and annex the Donbas region and its industry while he was at it.Unfortunately for him the initial invasion effort was crippled by mind-numbing levels of incompetence at all levels (for example some of the soldiers involved were genuinely unaware that they were invading another country until they started getting shot at, and their logistics chain was such a fucking clown show that some units were abandoning heavy equipment for lack of fuel barely an hour's drive from the Russian border), the Ukrainian resistance was much stiffer than expected, and the Western response was also much larger and much faster than expected - IIRC within a couple of months something like 30% of all Russian armoured vehicle losses were to Western-supplied ATGMs that were flooding into the country in large numbers.Once the Russians failed to win the war at the point where they had both the initiative and the greatest on-paper advantage in terms of military strength it was doomed to turn into a grinding quagmire hellhole as long as the Ukrainians had the will to hold out, which obviously they did. Russia is stuck in an odd position where Putin doesn't have the political capital to shift into a full-on war economy with full mobilisation but he's also in too deep and withdrawing would be politically disastrous as well after so many deaths and nothing really to show for it, barring something dramatic like a sudden Ukrainian collapse the long term prospects for Russia are looking pretty grim at the moment.
