>University of California professors are sounding the alarm on a “severe” lack of math skills among college students — thanks to a decision to ban standardized testing in admissions at the elite universities.
>More than 600 professors signed an open letter saying they’ve been forced to teach “middle school” math in Calculus and other courses as incoming students are alarmingly unprepared for college-level coursework.

They had a shitty system to begin with.
>uh, actually, despite your high test scores you can't come here because instead of doing the Movies Club, and running for school President, and playing tennis, you were at home studying or playing video games
>>

Just fail them. Wasting time teaching stuff everyone should already know isn't fair for the students who are actually ready for college
>>
A lot of people say that college should be "free" (publicly funded), but my biggest problem with that is that we already have public schooling and it's often considered inadequate.
To improve the education that people are already receiving seems a much better idea than to publicly fund even more education which as a result will likely deteriorate just as actual public schools have.

>>
>>535929436
The UC system allows students to appeal grades on the basis of race, gender, or sexual orientation discrimination. Everyone other than straight white men (who comprise a small fraction of the class body due to discrimination) follows this process whenever they get a grade they don't like. The appeals almost always either outright overturn the grade or allow the student to do some sort of makeup work to boost it.

Appeals that result in an overturn of the grade result in immediate discipline for the professor. Appeals that result in makeup work don't result in immediate discipline, but are a black mark that affects them during their performance review.

Because of that, the lowest score given for work that is turned in and tests that are taken is a B+, which is the equivalent of a failing grade even though it does not result in failing the class.

In other words, the professors literally can't fail them without being fired. The worst part is that their union won't defend them when they do get fired because they're branded a racist/sexist/bigot/Republican. It also prevents them from working in higher education again.

Former college professor here for 10 years. (Physics/Astronomy)
I had to teach students 8th grade algebra and 6th grade additon of mixed fractions. 20 year old women broke down crying in my class over angle variable algebra.

Zoomers are fucking dumb. They cannot do math without a calculator. You ask them to add any numbers with more than 1 digit? They pull put their phone. Heaven help you if you ask for an answer in variable form.

The worst part? We can't fail them. We are graded on pass rates and heavily pushed by admin to keep pass rates high. A student that flunks out isn't paying tuition.

I quit my job to manage a CVS. It's less stress and I make 20 grand more a year.

this. i'm sick of the rigged academia where no one fails. it's so watered down.
>>
>>535930781
Common Core was designed to dumb everyone down so that niggers and spics won't feel so bad, yes. Even the students from the so-called magnet schools were more less at remedial level. Unless a student went to a very elite, rigorous private school, you can't expect him to be able to write a coherent, grammatically correct paper or excel at mathematics. It's been this way for a long time. It's just gotten worse, so much worse that it's not sustainable for much longer. The whole system will come crashing down in our lifetime.
>>
>>535929191
This.
Fuckers always preferred retarded nogs who played ball over autists/introverts with high GPAs. That's why I always saw universities as a fucking joke, especially if they promoted their shitty sports programs.
You're supposed to be paying these schools so they can better educate you, not to fund Jamal's scholarship because he can kick a ball better than Tyrone from a rival school.
>>
Not the job of the university to deal with this.
You have world class universities in the dumbest most negrified hicktarded red WWE ghettobanger districts. The university must maintain its standards at the international level. If the K-12 system keeps up, that's on the state. If you have kids going to school, graduating, and they can't even get into the university in their own home town, the university will have zero problem getting kids from other cities, towns, or even out of state.

Does this hurt kids and families? Absolutely, but there isn't a true solution to this until these kids feel the pain, grow up, and try to make things better for those that come after them.
>>
>>535929051
What does middle school math mean? Like early Algebra? Because most students don't get into calculus until 12th grade or college
>>
>>535930524
It is not the responsibility of the university or the professor for you to internalize the content and get your dollar's worth.
This only matters when it starts to affect their prestige and interests. But guess what? No matter how rigorous you make a business or marketing degree, no one gives a shit, its garbage paper you can wipe your ass with anyways. For their actual prestige graduate programs, pre-med, law school sure, at that point they need to focus.

To change this mentality is to ask to change the national consciousness boomers destroyed.

One of my degrees is in engineering, but I had to take a course in the business college to cover a course that was only offered once a year. I ended up taking microeconomics with the economics majors.

Long story short, I had to sit through many classes where the professor had to teach the class to plot a line. That was a mind fuck.
>>
>>535931292

>>
>>535931433
My public high school was terrible, even though it was in a supposedly top district. The math teachers were godawful lazy morons who had students grade each other's homework. I took calculus in high school and passed it but really had no idea what the hell I was doing. At least my college professors knew what they were doing and could teach. So I retook precalculus and calculus. This time they were correctly taught.
>>535931463
There was no time to waste back in those days. Kids needed to be skilled in practical math and be able to write coherent business letters to help out their family business, so public schools in 19th-century America had to get right down to it, as quickly and efficiently as possible. And that's exactly what they did.

where were the universities during covid? why weren't they livestreaming panel discussions? where were the scientists reviewing the literature for the general public? where were the weekly reviews to see what the data showed and which predictions from the models were right? where were the humanities professors to discuss the affects of lockdowns?

Every once in a while you get someone like Peter Duesberg or Kary Mullis, who is willing to rock the boat.
