In Alaska you buy off the grid property and a portable saw mill. Buy a bunch of threaded rod and nuts and the long sealing strips in between the logs. If you make the foundation off the ground with cinder blocks you can use large threaded rod to hold the cabin up. When it settles, doors and windows stick, you can re-level the place with a wrench.

How big is the property? Who maintains the roads? Do you even own the access to the property? Are wells allowed? Is septic allowed? The price of good land can easily cost you 50k per acre in rural areas, not even considering some place like Montana where buildable land is limited or outside of a major city where rural land is premium like Boston in the most extreme or just your midwest city where people commute. Land is expensive and there ain't much left of it. It's even more crazy with data center development and billionaires buying all the land. Then you have all the other considerations. How do you live there and make an income? What is the cost of living? You could bleed through savings real quick if you don't know what you are getting yourself into. The days of buying a piece of land and living in a cabin died a long time ago. It's all a bunch of hippy homestead bullshit. I like homesteaders, but the idea has been killed.
