i grow hazelnuts. it's a bit challenging because they're wind pollinated, but in the winter. if it's too wet it doesn't happen. that said, most summers i do get hazelnuts. if you can harvest them before the squirrels and birds do. if you want to grow protein reliably it's best to focus on peas in the early spring, they can be massively productive with no natural pests in many areas. then you have the hazelnuts later, but more for fun and snacking.
