Ramanan Pathmanathan forced his victims to participate in video calls during which he ordered them to expose themselves and perform sexual acts, including with animals or family members.

A federal court in Washington sentenced Ramanan Pathmanathan, a 40-year-old resident of Toronto, Canada, to 33 years in prison for an extensive online sextortion ring that targeted more than a hundred minors in the United States. The sentence will be served consecutively to the 12-year prison term he is already serving in his home country for similar offenses.

Pathmanathan pleaded guilty in January 2026 to one count of producing child pornography and another of coercing and enticing a minor. According to court documents, between 2014 and his arrest in March 2021, he used multiple social media accounts while posing as a teenager from New Jersey to contact at least 145 girls and boys, some as young as 6 years old.

The indictment details that he demanded the victims participate in video calls during which he ordered them to expose themselves and perform sexual acts, including with animals or family members, and sent them images of adults having sex to “show” them what they were supposed to do. He recorded the material and stored it on his computer. When the minors refused to continue or blocked him, he threatened to distribute the images among their friends or family members.
