When Donald Trump took office in 2016, The nuclear deal (JCPOA) was in place and the Strait of Hormuz was open. The supreme leader of Iran Ali Khamenei, was amenable to US negotiations. Rather than renegotiating the JCPOA, Trump tore up the agreement and placed economic sanctions on Iran. In spite of this, Iran did not retaliate and did not close the strait of Hormuz. In 2025 the US and Israel launched the 12 day war while the US was in the midst of negotiating with Iran. Iran did not close the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's only retaliation was to launch missiles and drones against US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. Prior to launching these retaliatory strikes, Iran gave notices of the impending attack in order to minimize casualties.In 2026 the US again attacked Iran, resulting in the deaths of over 2,000 Iranians, including Ali Khamenei and over 160 children who's school was bombed. Iran finally retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz.Now we are trying to negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran. The new supreme leader of Iran is Mojtaba Khamenei, who's wife and son were among those killed in the 2026 US attacks. The world would have been much better off had Trump simply renegotiated the JCPOA rather than tearing it up in 2016. Instead Americans have been made less safe because of this disastrous path Trump has led us down.
