Basically, his group played a dungeon on a Hardcore Server and they got into a difficult situation and instead of risking his character he roached out like a bitch and ran, even though he could have done stuff to help everyone and potentially save them. That wasn't the issue. The issue is this guy's entire persona is built around being the most knowledgeable most skilled most competent guy around. Even down to using a voice changer to shift his voice deeper than it actually is. He was playing the class and spec with the most tools to specifically recover and stop a wipe in progress and when the pressure was on he wilted and ran without even trying to save anyone. Then after the dust settled he lied and tried to claim everything was on cooldown and he was out of mana even though everyone saw what was going on because he was streaming the whole thing. First of all, anyone playing classic wow hc is a fucking retard. There is no challenge whatsoever or anything interesting going on. The whole point of that "challenge" is to play as boring as possible and take 0 risks all the time. It's the opposite of fun. I leveled a char to 60 and wanted to kill myself at how bored I was.
This means that when you are doing a dungeon with other people you should always be super safe with your pulls. No zugzug from one pack to the next and get a bunch of packs together to aoe and playing it on the edge (actually having fun), no no. You pull one mob at a time, wait for the healer to drink then pull the next mob.
Lastly he's a ranged dps and he's not the one in control of how these situations will play out. That's mostly on the tank (even though it was the melee dps who pulled the extra mob because he wanted to hit from behind but it's still mainly the tanks fault for positioning the mob there instead of pulling back and playing it boring and safe like you're supposed to in hc)

Depending on the game, adding that layer of anxiety can enhance the experience. I'm not a wow player so I can't speak to that specifically but in all games with this mechanic the point is the same

Assaulting problems head on and retrying after failure is the best strategy when you can regenerate in full for free. Permadeath is considered too cruel for.standard game.play so it's an option for people to opt into to try and get that feeling. That feeling only exists if the risk is real. These guys got to experience the hardcore gameplay at its peak and it turns out they don't like it.

I played a warrior during vanilla, on a pc that could hardly run the game, if you knew the amount of poorly timed computer shitting the bed deaths I took while playing youd wonder why I even came back, never hit 60 until a few days after TBC came out, eventually caught up and got to raid some cool content. Still longed for the original version of the game and the original raids and stuff I missed on the version of the game that made me like it in the first place, they made unnecessary additions to the game, thought TBC was cool but everything after that just wasn’t the same despite the fact that I played most expansions upto Pandaria and Legion, kept wishing I could go back and experience the original raids. Got to do some of them in classic, was going to say I enjoyed it for all of two phases but I had to stop and correct myself, don’t think I enjoyed it much at all.

I think what's particularly strange about this case is that I probably knew dozens of guys like him when I was at university or in my first couple of jobs in the tech industry.

They are there because of their father. Not even because their father is remarkable, but simply because their father has put in like 20+ years into something like a company and then their son is brought in as a nepo hire. Or they just got the university place because of the recommendation letter from someone who studied there long ago, who may have done a bit of fundraising and it's to compensate for the guy's grades not being good enough to get that CS place or whatever.

And of course guys like this have many failed projects that they can't even admit they're failures. That often flunk out of group projects or team based activities. They will rightly get branded as flaky due to their big egos constantly writing cheques that their abilities cause to bounce.

The only noteworthy thing about this story for me is how he's just taken to streaming as a way of preserving his ego. And now that he's been bragging about himself, he now feels the need to save face and lie even more, because there are clips on the internet forever. 20 years ago, if he was the type of braggart that was making a fool of himself, he could just get a new alias and try to start fresh. Maybe even take a break from the internet. But the information cycle is so fast now, people addicted to the notifications on their phone or checking up on their favourite streamer that's streaming multiple times a week that there is now demand for constant updates, constant use of real names and identities. And it's not the internet I grew up with.
