Nobody actually wants to build a high speed rail. What they want is to give their lazy ass union stooges something to do to earn the outrageous pay they get normally for doing fuck all.

America built up its infrastructure a long time ago, so you have a lot of prime real estate for routing and transport already consumed by the existing railroads (whose paths were not designed for high speed rail and thus may be too bendy) or interstate highways.
