The Aussies fought the Japanese very tough in New Guinea. The Japanese were forced to move troops to New Guinea to fight the Aussies. This reduced the amount of men and materiel the Japanese had available to fight the US Marines landing on Guadalcanal. It was mostly Australian militia that fought the Japanese so heroically. Churchill had the Australian army tied up in North Africa. The heroic fight of the untrained and poorly equipped Australian militia on New Guinea against the combat experienced Japanese Imperial Army on New Guinea deserves to be studied.
