As a linguist myself I have to say that the word clanker absolutely is rooted in racism, and the reason is simple. On reddit it started as a meme in which you could replace the n-word with the word clanker, and then suddenly it would appear not racist. It is crude joke that calls back to the hard r n word, which must not be used without the hard r n word pass.
