I think it was inevitable. China was going through massive population explosion. Literally all of Southeast Asia was affected. Malaya (incl. Singapore) was over 50% Chinese at one point. Thailand, Indonesia, and the Phillippines all have millions of Chinese descendants. An Island of a relatively small quantity of people just off the coast of Fujian, the region most noted for its high emigration, was clearly going to get swamped by Chinese immigration, regardless of who controlled what quite honestly.
