I've been thinking about this for a while and I think there's many different factors but three stand out to me. First the ratio for the price of necessities and luxury goods has never been so in favor of luxuries, so the brain naturally views the luxuries as the better use of money. Second, many younger people have pessimistic views about the future so why would they not enjoy life now before it gets worse? And finally something I like to call "The Procreative Capital Paradox" the condition in which financial insecurity defers family formation, while the absence of family removes the primary motivator for capital accumulation perpetually. But honestly, decision makers are so fucking short sighted that they'd rather just say the kids they raised and taught are just stupid.
