Sadly it's nothing like it was 15-20 years ago. I'm talking complete cultural shift. 75% of people in most areas used to be hard-working, straight-edge, and surprisingly educated. All of the stereotypes were complete bullshit. Seems today that it's quite the opposite in most places. All of the older generation died off and what was mostly left behind was the bottom of the barrell. I'm not claiming that everyone is like that, or that lack of jobs doesn't play a huge role, but the reality is that you have lots of degeneracy there now. Nobody did drugs in the 90s, the only vice was drinking. Even then, it was usually just one bad egg in each family that did that. Even the ultra-poors in the hollers back then were respectable members of the community. Now it's a fucking mess. Seems like once all the elders died off over the years, it just spiraled downhill. The culture of young people jsut isn't the same. Not to mention with modern internet access, kids are learning trends from other states on TikTok and all that cringe shit. I don't think people realize how straight-edge much of appalachia was not that long ago. It's got this picture of being rebels, but that's really not the case. Everyone has a rebel or two in teh family, but that was about it back in the day. People were very mannered, literate, and not anti-social like now. It seems to have absorbed all of the negative stereotypes from the deep south somehow. I guess from the internet. It used to have it's own distinct culture from the deep south.
