In my opinion what happened was a perfect storm of all the flaws of so called modern democracy. Originally when the world went to this system there were many checks and balances that protected the pleb from these types of negative consequences. Gradually over time every protection was eroded using how democracy works against democracy. Basically those who become the most successful in our system are evil lying power seekers and then once in power, naturally those power seekers make themselves and their friends more powerful. Eventually after generations and generations of power creep you get the modern world where the people have zero say in how their countries are run and elections are basically fake and only exist as a way to trick the plebs into thinking all the problems are their fault because they simply voted wrong, totally redirecting the blame off the elites and back onto the people so there's no one to go after.
