This story has been framed as “evil corporate stole a collector’s Lego collection.” The reality is more complicated.Bryan Mansell consigned roughly 780 sealed sets and over 1,200 minifigures — valued between $150,000 and $200,000 — to a single Bricks & Minifigs store in Keizer, Oregon, owned by Crystal Law-Gorman. The contract was signed only between Mansell and Crystal’s LLC. Corporate was never a party to that agreement.Crystal’s store was already failing. She owed corporate significant money. In November 2024, corporate repossessed the store. Photos from that night show a substantial amount of Mansell’s yellow-dotted inventory still on the shelves. Corporate claims they only found $2,000–$5,000 worth of his product and offered it back. Mansell says far more was there.The most likely explanation is that Crystal sold off a large portion of the collection for cash while she still controlled the store, knowing she was about to lose it. She has since left the country and gone silent.
Corporate has remained surprisingly hands-off throughout this public fight. While the CEO and company are based in Utah and some local police and officials involved are LDS, both Bricks & Minifigs corporate and the LDS church itself are only tangentially connected to the original dispute. The actual contract was between Mansell and Crystal’s company — not corporate. The church had no involvement whatsoever. Much of the online outrage has been directed at targets that were barely involved in the core issue to begin with.
What started as a contract dispute between Mansell and Crystal has spiraled into something much larger. Police became heavily involved, conducting stops and searches that many view as questionable at best. One stop was initiated after Ben’s vehicle was seen rolling past a stop sign and only coming to a stop several feet beyond the line. Body cam footage from that stop was heavily redacted, with officers heard saying the goal was to “scare Ben a little bit.” An Airbnb was raided based on an Airbnb host claiming he overheard talk of stolen Legos.This case has grown far beyond the original disagreement over the Lego. What began as a business dispute between a collector and a franchisee has now dragged in police, multiple arrests, search warrants, and intense public scrutiny. The original contract issue is now only a small piece of a much larger situation.
