>>536481298Well to be fair, the great lakes indians did engage in copperworking but unlike anywhere else in the world it did not only not progress but practical use of copper tools actually vanished around 2,500-3,000 years before present. They mostly used native copper and native copper is really not that much better for most uses than wooden, bone, antler or stone tools. My best guess is when the easiest/most available copper ran out there was not very much incentive to dig deeper, though there was still a massive amount in the region.The Inca did have arsenical bronze and mesoamericans did have ornamental metallurgy including refinement of metals, but north american natives were generally limited to cold hammering and aside from the old copper culture it was pretty much exclusively hammered ornamental copper. Also to characterize north american agriculture as tribal gardening is pretty reductive. There were several sedentary agricultural traditions back east though most groups were semi-sedentary.
