Everywhere these are popping up. Months later the Save Alot or Krogers is gone. They provide a portion of the jobs and have a closed supply chain, you almost never see any American brands here for whatever reason.

Is this some sort of subsidized takeover of our grocery industry? Do they put sawdust in the food? Congress should look into it

knew a guy who was a grocery manager at a store chain bought out by aldi's. They didn't lay off the employees immediately, but would look for petty ways to fire them. In the bakery, the women in the department marked down expired cupcakes for my friend. he bought and consumed them. The new store manager brought him into his office, claimed he had stolen the cupcakes and tried to coerce him into revealing who had marked down the cupcakes. My friend refused and as a result was fired on the spot as well as the entire bakery department. aldi's pressed charges on all suspected to be involved as theft. The judge threw out the case of course

Everything in this post. It's a great store. It's sad the typical citizen is so self-centered and inconsiderate that they have to do the quarter in the carts thing, but I feel like it sets the tone so you see less degens in the store overall. It's so cal so it's still a wasteland of half-animals, but ALDI folks are way better behaved than the full on gorillas at Wal-Mart. They also get new items every week, so you're always going to find something different. Last time my wife went, she found a nice new window-mounted cat bed for like $8. The milk and eggs are each almost a dollar cheaper. I mean shit, a 12 pack of coke cans is $10(!) at walmart but the aldi brand is like $4.
>>
>>536522967
Aldi runs more efficiently than American grocers, requiring fewer employees so the products can be sold cheaper. It also carries mainly off-brand generic items which are cheaper than mainstream alternatives at other stores.
I think the proliferation of Aldi in North America is a sign of general economic tightening, as people on budgets can't really justify going to other stores when Aldi is cheaper.

right place and right time. Aldi's is for poor people, it just happens that most people are poor nowadays, I go there myself and the lines remind me of great depression lines. Here in Spain we have spanish supermarkets and then the big ones like Auchan, Carrefour and since some years ago Lidl and Aldi. More competition is always better for prices.

I went for the first time to Aldi recently and didn't see anything special. It looked like a Lidl but smaller. Maybe the one I went was a smaller one and there are bigger ones, I don't know.
>>
>>536523101
>unironically here in Socal my local Aldi has better prices
Whenever I visit the US I'm always struck by how expensive your groceries are. Like, even allowing for the fact that salaries are higher in America shit's way too expensive. That's not just my personal feeling either, American grocery chains are far less competitive than in a lot of European countries.

Basically Walmart and a couple of the other of the biggest corporations have been effectively operating as a cartel for the last couple of decades. Once the big chains won the battle between superstores and the old-timey mom and pop places, in many places they had no competition and were free to stop having to compete on price.

American retailers have become fat, greedy, and uncompetitive. Aldi is taking advantage of a gap in the market.

> i wont go buy American brands from Ralph's (this is what Kroger calls themselves here) just because theyre American. make better food US
A lot of Aldi's stock is sourced from American farmers, they just try to cut out the middle man as much as possible. Why pay twenty percent more for Wonder Bread(TM) sold by Walmart when Aldi own-brand bread is made from wheat grown in the exact same place, just baked in their own bakeries?

>>536523150
>They surround well established grocery stores geographically and strangle them like some parasite
You mean like Walmart did to all the old mom and pop stores? No idea why you would have any sympathy for massive corporate stores getting squeezed out by someone offering better quality and better prices.

We got an Aldi where I live a few years ago. You know what happened to the supermarkets that were already here? Nothing, because the British grocery market is already ruthlessly cut-throat. The Aldi does okay but it's never as busy as the British shops (Tesco, Waitrose, etc). It's kind of funny seeing Europeans teaching Americans about survival-of-the-fittest free market capitalism.
>>
>>536523278
That's true. We're also required to wear mono headsets and stay in constant contact with the manager. It's more efficient than roaming around the corridors, looking for that guy who put that thing in the wrong aisle.
>>
>>536524281
I just looked it up. There isn't a single US supermarket chain that doesn't sell genetically modified products. Apparently, many customers in the US aren't interested in the topic. But aldi offers USDA Organic or Non-GMO project verified products in every category.
>>
>>536523682
>low cost
Not really - these big store relly on loss leader items and big sales to get you though the door, but their prices are on the level as most local shops. I can actually get cured meats cheaper from a local minimart than from Lidl. These type of stores relly on stocking smaller invenotory and lean on store-brands to make savings . I usually go once or twice a months for a big dicount like when i need 20kilos of sugar or 12 litres of cooking oil. If not for the big discounts they run, most people would stick to the smaller stores.

Aldi is basically a food bank. It's all expired reject food. Random ass imported brands and unsold stock. It's the Ross Dress For Less of food. You can find shit like Dora the Explorer themed knockoff brand Capri Suns that are 2 months from expiring. I'd only be less inclined to shop at the shartmart grocery section.

It's fine if poors want to shop there, it keeps the price down for better stores.

I went shopping at a walmart in berlin once, shortly after it opened. I wasn't impressed. They were also more expensive than aldi, lidl, or metro. I’ll tell you a little secret.
Aldi and Lidl are government operations to keep the poor masses fed cheaply, to keep them from being upset.
Official story is, that Aldi was founded by the Albrecht brothers and Lidl/ Kaufland by a guy named Schwartz.
The thing is, nobody ever saw these people, nothing is known about them.
A couple of years back, some journalists tried to track them down to make a documentary about them, but were subsequently threatened by government officials and agencies to better mind their own business.
There are some stories about food companies who asked questions why Aldi and Lidl could sell their products for a cheaper price as they paid for it.
Also, payment came at least once from a government account.
>>
>>536522967
I don't see the issue? It's fruits and vegetables?
>>
>>536527730
>There are some stories about food companies who asked questions why Aldi and Lidl could sell their products for a cheaper price as they paid for it.
They don't. They sell so cheaply because they buy even cheaper, which is due to their dominance of the purchasing market and their ability to squeeze the producers dry.

Fwiw OP is basically lying. Aldi is growing in the USA, but existing grocery stores are not going out of business because of Aldi.

Aldi is a great value, but really only applies to poor people. Anyone with money doesn't want to shop there because of the lack of options. Even amongst the poor people, they will alternate between Aldi and Wal-Mart, because next to Aldi, wal-mart is the 2nd cheapest but Wal-Mart also has tons of products that Aldi doesn't sell
>>

Death to America
>>
>>536526607
A lot of the processed foods at Aldi suck. The reason to go to Aldi is to buy produce, milk, eggs, and bread. Aldi is great for those staples. Their meat quality is sub-par, and their soups and other canned good are gross and full of seed oils. Some of their frozen stuff can be okay.

The biggest issue we have right now as consumers is that there is no one store that is the best deal. Aldi is the best deal for some items. Wal-Mart is the best deal for other items. And then even places like Whole Foods will actually be the cheapest for a small handful of organic products.

If you really want the best deals, you have to go shop around at multiple stores to get the absolute cheapest price. But of course, doing this costs you time and money, so you don't really get the true savings anyway
