People pretend that they have more agency than they actually have, when in reality they're prisoners to their circumstances.Sure: you could theoretically chimp out, rebel against your situation, but you know very well that you would most likely only worsen it - you would end up in jail, mental hospital or worse, so you don't do anything and cope that's because you're smart (and in a sense you are to not do that, it just doesn't make your lack of choice any better).
