A giant Islamic center will be built in Zagreb Croatia

THE ISLAMIC community in Croatia has launched one of its largest projects – the construction of a 9,000 square meter Educational Center in the immediate vicinity of the Islamic Center Zagreb, confirmed to Hina the president of the Meshihat of the Islamic Community in Croatia, Mufti Academician Aziz ef. Hasanović.

In the year that marks 110 years since the official recognition of Islam in Croatia, the Islamic Community is launching a project for a new Educational Center that will include an Islamic Gymnasium, a student dormitory, the Institute for Arabic Language and Islam, and a number of sports and educational facilities.

In the future Educational Center, the Dr. Ahmed Smajlović Islamic Gymnasium will increase its capacity to 200 students. Hasanović points out that the existing spatial and technical conditions are no longer sufficient for the needs of the school, and that this is precisely the main reason for launching the project. "The current capacity and technical conditions are insufficient to provide students with the best possible conditions for learning the material and acquiring new knowledge, which is the biggest motivation for building a new building," he said.
"Arabic is being taught, a significant portion of the students are not Muslims"

He added that the educational program will remain in line with the regulations of the Ministry of Science and Education and that the school will continue to be open to all interested students.

An integral part of the future center will also be the existing Institute for Arabic Language and Islam "Ševko ef. Omerbašić", which Hasanović claims is unique not only in Croatia but also in the wider region. The institute implements verified Arabic language learning programs, and among the students there is a significant proportion of non-Muslims.

"The programs implemented by the Institute are intended for everyone, and the fact that about half of the participants, and in some groups even more, are not Muslims or have had no previous contact with the Arabic language speaks volumes in favor of the openness of this institution. Our Institute is also recognized by state bodies and provides educational services in this segment to anyone who finds such education useful or necessary for the most efficient performance of their duties," he notes.

In addition to the above-mentioned content, the new Educational Center will include a sports hall, an amphitheater for lectures and presentations, specialized offices, and spaces necessary for the administrative functioning of the school and center.
Construction is most likely to begin in 2027.

The architectural solution for the future center was selected in a public competition that received 19 works. The best-rated solution was offered by architects Hrvoje Bilandžić and Davor Plavšić, along with visualization associate Roman Krajcarz.

According to the current dynamics of the project, the start of construction is most likely expected next year, after completing all necessary procedures and obtaining a building permit.

The center will be built on a 9,000 square meter plot of land located east of the existing Islamic Center, which was purchased from the City of Zagreb through a public tender.

"The process took quite a long time due to the prescribed procedure. However, my satisfaction is even greater because the entire process was completed in a transparent manner," said Hasanović.
Project financing

When asked what the total value of the investment is, Hasanović replied that it is still too early to talk about it because "all the items in the cost estimate are still being added up."

However, the costs so far of purchasing the land, designing and fulfilling the conditions for obtaining a building permit, which has yet to be obtained, are being borne by the Islamic Community in Croatia itself with the help of donations. The Mufti has previously called on believers to participate with donations of 250 euros or 1,000 euros, which will grant them the status of a vakif, i.e. a donor.

When asked whether he expects the Republic of Croatia and the City of Zagreb to financially support the construction of the Educational Center, Hasanović noted that it is still too early to talk about future support.

"This is one of the most significant projects for the community, which is special in terms of its future users and purpose, as well as its future additional contribution to the development of society, both through the integration of new ones and through the joint education of those who will attend. That is why it is important to us that this project, even through the construction process itself, connects different people, that through the facility we build and strengthen relationships with everyone, so that tomorrow will be better for all of us," Hasanović emphasized, adding that due to the positive experience so far, he is "confident that everyone will help according to the available possibilities."
