People run LLMs on their local machines with a simple 12 GB graphics card all the time, and china's AI projects give comparable results to the US's without a reliance on datacenters. The datacenters were never a necessary part of this equation, and if you wonder why we built them anyway you need only look at the fact that its the CAPEX portion of AI that has generated the gorillian dollars that makes AI 'profitable'. Aka: the only part of the AI bubble that actually puts money in their pockets is grifting investors to build a thousand more very expensive data centers. Thats the scam. They don't actually care if the datacenters are useful, just that they get built because thats where the money is. And once the bubble bursts we are going to be left with a shit ton of digital 'infrastructure' that we spent trillions of dollars on, is fucking worthless, and will all decay into nonfunctionality within a few years unless we spend trillions more to constantly maintain it.
