Unfortunately, so far it seems that going off the drugs results in a return of the cravings because your body is literally addicted to sugar and there is something chemically wrong with your brain. You can't expect to go off of GLP-1 and keep the benefits any more than you can expect to stop taking SSRI's and keep the benefits. That said, GLP-1s (and the incoming GLP-3s) moving from injection to pill form makes them much cheaper and more practical to take long term, no different from someone that has to take heart medication for a bum ticker. GLP-1s are also a fairly young treatment, its entirely possible that given additional research we will find ways to address the problem more permanently. But for now, one has to assume that they will be on at least a low dose of the medication for the rest of their life, whatever level results in a maintenance of eating habits at a healthy weight instead of an active weight reduction.
