I have seen some of these issues happen to me and others like me so to stay on point.

Taking out incentives and the pay away they are just more concerned about other issues , and not actually repairing the stuff that needs to be fixed, the claim that he units are all done well on paper because at the end of the day its all about money for them and not getting it done right, and not even taking care of the men and women that get it done right.
the other issue that has been common lately is the fact that there is a lot of individuals that are in upper management that should not be there due to their low experience , i feel that they did not put their time in they just dont have the experience to speak on or deal with what we deal with and tell us what and how to do it.

Upper management gives themselves gold embossed everything and swipes the company card.
Then the mechanic is told hes expected to provide his own tools, as is the carpenter and plumber.

We are moving towards a tiered society, and it isn't talked about enough. Their is no upward mobility without nepotism or casting couch, working hard has no reqard or even incremental carrots to reward and encourage participation, all you get is the "one day if you work hard, you'll get the carrot".

The paperwork barrier is a real thing too, office workers as an irl example will sit in a room and say they have no idea what im up too with straight faces and email eachother the same thing, then all go ask me to handle things while making comments about how I should only be listening to person 1 because hes my boss, than later give me the option of choosing who I want to work under.

Another part of the problem is that the industry is subsidized by rich boomers who don't care about outcomes. They'll bring a car in for a repair, bring it back four times because the wagie getting paid peanuts can't fix the problem and the shop wants to use Chinesium aftermarket parts for maximum margins. The boomer will drop 6k on repairs, it still won't be fixed, so his "solution" is to buy another $80K BMW. The shop will just move on to the next boomer; there is no incentive to change.

The root of the issue is land ownership. In most businesses, the owner provides the capital and the employees provide the labor. In car repair, the mechanic provides the labor *and* most of the capital (tools). This means that mechanics are really only employees on paper. In reality they are more like sharecroppers, and shop owners are basically landlords renting lifts at under loan shark terms. Any mechanic who owns tools could go into business himself instantly, if only he had the land and building.

The only time I've had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't fix is when it either died suddenly and so hard that it was already broken beyond repair, or the vehicle was at 300,000 miles and just at the point everything on it was beat to hell so it was just end of life no matter what.

It's been rare that I had a problem that both stopped me from driving but at the same time wasn't so bad I needed to buy a new car anyways. The closest thing to that is when I lost a tire or a shock.

I lost an old bmw and an old f150 to over heating issues before but those cars weren't worth much and I knew the combo of diagnosing and fixing them would cost more than just buying a new car so I sold them for scrap and did just that.

I go to mechanics as often as I go to doctors. Never. That would be different if they didn't cost your first born child

I drive an EV but still have gas car. I would imagine there will be less need for grease monkeys in the future. I was in a Tesla dealership where they work on cars and it was so clean in there. Of course EVs still need suspension parts, half shafts, tires but you don't have to replace timing belts, alternators, starters, exhaust, fuel systems, etc. I've watched replace battery packs. Seems very simple if you have a lift but probably doable with some good floor jacks--an ev is a high powered golf cart.

I got ran out of the Navy because I dared to remind my chain of command they were in command and had to give me orders, they couldn't just waffle and expect me to read their minds.
In fact that's exactly what they wanted me to do, act on my own authority (wrongly) and predict what they would want me to do in the future not only so they wouldn't have to do their own job, but also so that if anything went wrong I would be responsible for acting without orders. Of course if things went right they would get the credit, and they would reward me with a positive evaluation which helps with promotions.
I found this incredibly frustrating and it fucked me up mentally because I couldn't just quit. I got fucked over and had to finish out an extra set of orders in the end basically enslaved and even just thinking about it for this post is making me tremble a bit with rage.

In the end this is just more evidence of the feminization of the workplace and the rise of bullshit jobs. People who actually do real work get penalized and abused, while people who play nepotism games circlejerk each other as everything collapses around them.

I think you could make a very very strong argument that what you just described is a symptom of the auto industry fucking up their car designs intentionally. Not some inherently insurmountable problem.
If the car companies would start prioritizing good engineering, and specifically, repairability/durability, you wouldn't need these ridiculous rocket scientist level repair tech positions at all.
But they're like any other industry, prioritizing profits instead of good product. They COULD design a headlight that the end user could easily swap out for a cheap replacement, but they'd rather design it in a way that is almost impossible to replace without tearing half of the engine bay out, AND use a bespoke part on every single model, so the part is also expensive. If they're really being kikes, they serialize the parts, and have them refuse to work if the central kike-o-tron onboard computer decides it's not a verified part.

Most people don't realize that car dealerships sometimes only break even on new car sales. I think the highest average in the country a few years ago was CarMax at like 15% margin. Good post but id add onto the pay portion: the issues with flat rate. Unless you're the chosen few who get the gravy jobs from management or a shit ton of pre-delivery inspections, few have a higher ratio of billable hours/works worked. Plus there's always slow periods where no one makes 40 hours a week.

Personally I averaged $10/hour under the flat rate system as a flat rate mechanic and quit. Now in my other career I have 3 guys working for me that were 3rd or 4th year apprentices and either didn't like it ir can't find a job as a mechanic. Which is odd because if the industry is so desperate, then why are they not being hired?
Simple: no shop wants to train apprentices because of the lack of loyalty and mechanics don't want to train apprentices because there's no pay incentive for them to train these kids. Why would a mechanic take time out of his day to walk a tire jockey or lube monkey through tracing an electrical short when he's got a car on the lift? If shops paid mechanics a percentage of the total work their ASSIGNED apprentice performed, it would fix the loyalty problem and create more effective future mechanics instead of 4th year apprentices swimming in tool debt.

I'll happily pay my guys $50/hr, and they deserve it. But my labor rate would have to go up to $250/hr and no one's going to pay that. People already bitch about $100 oil changes. There's always some buddy who'll fix it for $50 and a sixpack, and then shrug when it doesn't fix the problem. I'm not touching that mess or that customer.

Once you get 3 to 5 years in, the skillset sort of tops out. There's always something to learn, especially with the technology in the cars changing as much as it is, but you have 90% of the skills you will ever need. So the pay sort of tops out too. The only way to make more is to go flat rate and take the jobs where you can beat book time. Or go into management or sales. I do believe in paying for their time. But it seems like it's feast or famine, so it swings between watching customers go away or watching the guys polish their tools. Scheduling is a bitch and hurts payroll, but at least I have enough loyal customers that are willing to wait a few days instead of going down the road.

With everything computerized, you're getting into electrical diagnostics more, which sucks ass as bad as it ever has. Customer isn't going to pay you for the three hours is took to find an abraded wire in the engine harness. Or enough to justify the $15000/yr you spend on the equipment to program a new computer module. Because the guy at Autozone hooked up a scanner and gave a generic recommendation, it only took five minutes to misdiagnose the problem, why should I pay $150 for diagnostics? There's always been that subset of customers that run a car for 50k to 80k miles then trade it in, most likely going see more of that.
