this issue has been coming up a lot recently, im going to give you my opinion due to the fact that i don’t believe that most of what the news media outlets and youtube videos out there haven’t stitched up the cold truths.Im going to give you guys the raw truth in why thats happening and how this is going to affect us , some of you may not like but it needs to be said at this point , this problem's been coming for 20 plus years ,I think the industry knew it was coming and they exactly nothing about it they keep preaching the same solutions that just hasn’t worked
>Inb4 >this is all my opinion of coarse. >But this is also 25 years of experience in this field.(a little bit of background about myself) i have worked third shift for 8 of my years Road service , dealership, unions, all kinds of conditions worked nights days week ends holidays , i started out as a helper back then when there was no background checks no drug tests, and no other stuff of that nature , pretty much worked with some undesirable people you had to have thick skin to work back then , it was a different time , either way i put my time in and its safe to say i can give you my opinion on thisI have seen some of these issues happen to me and others like me so to stay on point.
>#1 concern - upper management. The number one concern I can think of why we got here is upper management in these larger companies has just destroyed the whole reputation and outlook of this job , with them Taking out incentives and the pay away they are just more concerned about other issues , and not actually repairing the stuff that needs to be fixed, the claim that he units are all done well on paper because at the end of the day its all about money for them and not getting it done right, and not even taking care of the men and women that get it done right.the other issue that has been common lately is the fact that there is a lot of individuals that are in upper management that should not be there due to their low experience , i feel that they did not put their time in they just dont have the experience to speak on or deal with what we deal with and tell us what and how to do it.>when I started out everyone in upper >management/sales/advisors were ex >mechanics so it was easier to take orders from >them to take guidance from and advice mentorship etc, >they knew what it took they knew how long it took, best case scenario worst case scenario >they knew if the vehicle would not be able to make the repair on time. And they were able to get any situation covered instead of lying to customers and mechanics, wich is have seen a lot of that going on , >they would claim the unit would be ready when it wont because they dont know what it takes to get it done.
>#2 concern - mechanics pay.The second biggest concern mechanics have is pay , pay is not nearly enough for the amount of Work , tools, knowledge and experience needed in this career.>when i first started out i ran in with a few >buddies of mine and i was making about 4$ or >$5 dollars an hour more than then they were - >fast forward 5 or 6 years later they are making >$25,000 dollars more a year than me in their selective careers. So this career just did not stay up the pace in pay compared to the other careers , me and many others in this field have tried to look into Something else to get out of this career a couple times earlier on , on my behalf i just couldn’t afford to do it and i personally think the industry does this to you in order to trap you in to it because thats what it kinda did to me , and the longer your in depending on your experience you cant really go anywhere else. The toolage is only getting more and more expensive they expect you to have every tool and not pay you for it ,>the incentives like food and tool allowance are gone with the wind.>the last time i brought it up in an interview the >interviewer had no ideas what i was even talking about or what that was, never hear of it.
>3# concern -benefits and retirement. Now the benefits could be much better retirement could be much better, >all the different jobs i have had over the years the benefits were never really that great. They have been kinda of expensive including the ones that pay for the mechanics benefits were still crappy in its own way.>one company i worked for payed for your >benefits %100 but had no retirement whats so ever. And with that all said the company still wondered why they couldn’t get anybody especially to stay long term , many guys would stay a year or two and move on.
>#4 concern - loyalty and trustLoyalty is out the window for these previous reasons that i have mentioned , if you are not offered enough money they are going to move on, >this has happened to me i have asked for a >raise and they gave me every excuse under the >book why they didn’t have it , they couldn’t do it Not right now, etc. So then i put my notice in , two weeks later and now all of a sudden they came up with the money i have had this happen to me and multiple other guys i have worked with , so right after that you just have a bad taste in your mouth. , upper management is constantly lying to mechanics thats another big issue i see and its getting worse lately than ever.> heres the thing - to you upper management people.!!!!!!!
>#5 biggest concern - lay offs and degradation. You keep hearing me mention about upper management over and over and its , this issue started during the pandemic a lot of the larger companies and car dealerships started pushing away and getting rid of older mechanics , they felt that they were getting paid to much and not getting work done for some reason so???¿>they got rid of them for what ever reason.I actually heard some one from the financial side of the last company i worked for say that for what they were paying two older mechanics they can hire four younger guys to do double the workFor twice the money and less pay.>and thats what they ended up doing. They had this great idea of leasing or buying fleet trucks , keep them 5 years right under warranty this way the younger guys would just do brakes ,tires, and oil changes everything else would have to be done at the dealer ,>only problem with is it backfired on them and >they had more trucks at the dealer then they >had on the road. KekSo that that technically did not work , a lot of these truck leasing companies liked to hire kids straight out of tech schools , they promise them the world after a year.>well the year showed up with empty promises,>Just recently i heard last year one of the >biggest ford dealerships had 11 or 12 guys walk >right out the job for that reason alone.I guess they kind of shot themselves in the foot on that , these companies expect these kids to get all their licenses and diplomas or certificates That they ask them to do and they dont keep their end of the bargain.
I agree with everything you said, point 1 is huge.Upper management gives themselves gold embossed everything and swipes the company card. Then the mechanic is told hes expected to provide his own tools, as is the carpenter and plumber. We are moving towards a tiered society, and it isn't talked about enough. Their is no upward mobility without nepotism or casting couch, working hard has no reqard or even incremental carrots to reward and encourage participation, all you get is the "one day if you work hard, you'll get the carrot".The paperwork barrier is a real thing too, office workers as an irl example will sit in a room and say they have no idea what im up too with straight faces and email eachother the same thing, then all go ask me to handle things while making comments about how I should only be listening to person 1 because hes my boss, than later give me the option of choosing who I want to work under.>reject the [choice]>tell them its their decision to make >somehow this fristrates/stressed him out.Its a horrible but strangely amusing place.
People have gotten too used to being able to wave a credit card at their problems rather than having to fix them themselves. I saw this coming and just learned to be my own mechanic.
>>536586221Looks like you're done posting Mexican bro.I love the smell of grease, gas and exhaust. You should open your own shop with a bunch of boomer mechanics and specialize in refurbishing busted car parts and replacing busted parts that can't be refurbished with salvaged parts. You can buy busted cars that are not worth repairing and make a huge profit just by selling parts that still work.Work around the clock because people will flock to your shop. Everyone is getting poorer and will opt for your cheaper refurbished and salvaged parts plus replacement work.Be for other people the upper management you want to have.
Dude no one cares. Post this boomer shit on Facebook or something. No one wants to be a mechanic and work on cars for $5 an hour
>>536586221Its the "fear of".I have insider info, and obviously was in a protected position and know more about numbers than I let on.I stand back and see the full spectrum picture of whats going on here, the lack of labor, the lack of skilled labor and yet its always them showing you the tiny stick. Its never "would you kindly", its always >I need you.>you have too.>if you dont x y will by upset.>im the only thing keeping you here, ect. They'll sit their and swear up and down everyone needs to tighten their belts, but the only actual thing they accomplished is restricting labor and ensuring all work happens and is "handled" by them. They are trying to remove all thinking aspects of the job and then transition into a "telling" people their jobs and then going back to emailing eachother while always reminding you "thats our job!".Then they dont hire labor, only their friends and now you have a 3:1 office worker to labor ratio. If you imply, insinuate, or dont play their silly games its>contract worker.Instant termination. Employees dont exist, and can be made to not exist so that labor competes among itself and doesnt ask for a raise, or you just swap out "the components"All the paperwork caste people hold conventions on how to pull the ladder up, try talking to narcissistic boomers who worked in business their whole life sometime and blow smoke up their ass, its the reason I donned the 39.99 cuck polo. Also you dont have any sort of upward mobility under the wing of a boomer, you'll notice when their doing the training you explicitly wanted their is always "some reason"Thus their end is never upheld by their own dictate.
>>536586958Ill pay 60$ an hour to grind rust from under a truck with the intentions of undercoating it.If you hit wires I wont be angry, you wanna do that shit?, I dont.
>>536585905>aviation>over a quarter of all aircraft mechanics and electrical technicians are of retirement age>another quarter of them will retire in five or ten years>no young people want to fix planesYou think its funny that airplanes are falling out of the sky now, just wait until all the boomers are gone.
>>536585905There isn't actually a shortage of mechanics or any other workers there is only shortage of employers willing to pay. Meanwhile shop rates where I live are $200+/hour so any big job like heads easily exceeds the value of the vehicle.
>>536586958I care and I worked as a mechanic apprentice for free.
i'm not reading this, be more concise next time
>>536585905Tl;dr?
>>536587077Boomers refused to teach or train young folks in any capacity. Ive been dealing with their outright hostile behavior for 15+ years.I have indents in my shins because my first week on the job i used a chopsaw that was out of angle but the dial said 0' so they threw the blocks at me.I couldn't afford to leave and had to hop an 8' fence everytime the breaker tripped.I dont work for boomers, I have to work under one now and its the constant "i hold the whip hand here" mentality thats just completely unnecessary because if you tried that with someone who wasn't a member of your own race the last and only thing you would hear is "Falcoo Puuuu"
>>536587003>I have insider info about being a mechanic wage slave in bumfuck CanadaLmao this board is hilarious. Are these posts even real or bots
>>536587122>shop rates.Kek, I know that .gov pays for mechanics and all I have to say to anons is go buy wrenches right now.The deal they get is insane in comparison to other trades, especially if you like flying in a plane.
>>536587003So... what's the insider info? It's the same shit everywhere.
>>536587381In some places in Canada turning wrenches is like 50% of the budget,Do you actually think anyone in any form of government knows what a 10mm socket is, or would question why it costs 79.99
>>536587077>no young people want to fix planesLook at the airline pay scales, the union agreements are public. They all require 8-10 years to top out. When boomers got hired they topped out in 6 months but over the years they voted longer and longer pay scales for the new guys.
>>536587621"Its even stupider than previously thought"But society is moving towards a tiered society with castes.Once your on the other side of 30/hr and especially after 70/hr you cant talk about things like numbers, or tell the paperworkers you know the exact amount of money the .gov is giving them per house, they just get rid of you kek.You have to humor them and pretend everyone needs to tighten up their bootstraps and belt.If you have a criminal record or DUI, its extremely hard to break into high trust roles, .gov, and Gucci insider contract work, and even with that, you might fail and get flagged then internally they see it and pretend not to hold it over you or ever mention it.They just pay you to spike your cortisol for fun. Accept it and smile.
>I work on cars for no money and get covered in shit all day... here's the cold truth the media isn't telling you!!Lmao shut up my dudes
>>536585905I mean yeah it sucks we all know that, but what else are you going to do? Be a plumber and work on shit encrusted toilets all day? Or some terrible and dangerous manual labor job out in the elements?I agree with everything you say but I can't picture myself doing anything else. If you find the right shop it's not too bad. If you're not already in the trade though don't bother.
>>536587757Yes.And then nowadays instead of pensions and guaranteed jobs with rights and no phone calls between Friday 3:01PM and Monday 8:00am.Your a contract worker, or classified as "seasonal" so they dont have to legally pay you overtime>incorrect, but if they say this and you accept it, it becomes your own fault, legally. The TFW issue is just a way they can have their work force subsidized 30% by the taxpayer, then cry about how they cant afford to pay you because:>points at the immigrant. While ten minutes later championing the immigrant over his own people, and pledging fealty to muh pension, and then telling you>he needs youTo work harder.
>>536587853We're already there. HR is cancer. They tried to refuse my raise and I told them that I can't focus on working while worrying about my bills and putting food on the table for my senpai.
>>536588244>for my senpai.KEK! Forgot about this filter. Abbreviation for family.
>>536585905Don't forget cars are getting more complex and harder to work on, OP. I think that's why no one wants to be a mechanic nowadays. Meanwhile other trades keep getting easier thanks to power tool companies investing a lot on R&D.
>>536587964Plumber and OBM is 120/k+I personally am transitioning into being the perfect tax credit stacker, literally fuck working for a living.Pay my tax credit, wagie.
>>536585905oh well - pay more.Problem solved.
>>536587927They have a severe shortage of trades too.Its fucking hilarious, complex systems can barely be maintained when you throw government money at the bitch.
Faggot OP ghosted his on thread. Fuck this noise, I'm out.
>boomers are beginning to feel the consequences of their actionsNobody gives a damn. Good luck with your bags. Most people today prefer that everything burns down.
>>536588574Tell them you plan on dropping out of the work force because society doesnt reward participation.
This is the least interesting blog in the catalog right now, how do I unsubscribe?
>>536587757I remember applying for a union gig at an airport and the first couple of years they wanted me to work crazy night shifts I am talking midnight to 9AM Thursday to Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday was my weekend. Union rep useless 70 year old smiled during the interview and said maybe after 5 years I could bid for better hours. I would have 0 social life and go insane if I accepted that job
>>536588618I already did that. They paid me handsomely to correct your mistakes and wanted to pay me even more handsomely to continue doing so. But fuck you all. I'm not participating again until everything's burned to the ground.
>>536586221It sounds like there's no solution.
>>536585905Everything you wrote ignores the elephant in the room. They simply imported 30+ million foreigners to your country and many became mechanics that undercut the wages of your industry. The good white mechanics became heavy diesel mechanics as foreigners completely monopolized the consumer market. Here almost every mechanic is a chink migrant on a foreign worker visa they pay the chinks who do the work barely $20/hr and pocket the rest of the money. I guarantee where you are that companies are using H1b import workers too. They simply source from some staffing agency of all spics, azns and jeets. The real skill and money is in bodyshop work and those guys have to be almost materials engineers in order to fabricate new parts and voodoo fix the modern cars. Chinks almost exclusively do that here too because their uncle back in Shenzhen will fabricate new body pieces to be welded on for next to nothing as it's all low paid labor.
>>536585905Based post OP this is indeed a huge issue.Another part of the problem is that the industry is subsidized by rich boomers who don't care about outcomes. They'll bring a car in for a repair, bring it back four times because the wagie getting paid peanuts can't fix the problem and the shop wants to use Chinesium aftermarket parts for maximum margins. The boomer will drop 6k on repairs, it still won't be fixed, so his "solution" is to buy another $80K BMW. The shop will just move on to the next boomer; there is no incentive to change. The root of the issue is land ownership. In most businesses, the owner provides the capital and the employees provide the labor. In car repair, the mechanic provides the labor *and* most of the capital (tools). This means that mechanics are really only employees on paper. In reality they are more like sharecroppers, and shop owners are basically landlords renting lifts at under loan shark terms. Any mechanic who owns tools could go into business himself instantly, if only he had the land and building.
The only time I've had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't fix is when it either died suddenly and so hard that it was already broken beyond repair, or the vehicle was at 300,000 miles and just at the point everything on it was beat to hell so it was just end of life no matter what. It's been rare that I had a problem that both stopped me from driving but at the same time wasn't so bad I needed to buy a new car anyways. The closest thing to that is when I lost a tire or a shock. I lost an old bmw and an old f150 to over heating issues before but those cars weren't worth much and I knew the combo of diagnosing and fixing them would cost more than just buying a new car so I sold them for scrap and did just that. I go to mechanics as often as I go to doctors. Never. That would be different if they didn't cost your first born child
>>536589343Yes not to sound like a commie but unless actual ownership is seize from the current owners nothing will change.
>>536589425>>536589455>>536589471very organic
Would it kill mechanic shops to hire a secretary to handle scheduling? After my uncle retired who was my main mechanic it has become a nightmare to get anything done. Everytime I pull in "uhhhhhhh we are busy......uhhhhhhh no I can can't guarantee when we look at this come back in two hours and maybe we can service this but no guarantee" then I drive to the next shop and it's the same shit. Before I texted my uncle saying my brakes were fucked or whatever and he says "ok come on Tuesday at 11AM" hate this shit. This is why garbage like pep boys exist because these greedy boomers won't modernize
>>536589664>he doesn't pay in cash and give an extra few hundred. I never have that problem, anon....know lots of people who do.
>>536588769That's because everything in a union like shifts is bid on by seniority, same with vacations you will never get December off or the summer because guys have been there 40 years and refuse to retire. So what you do is end up bidding to become a vacation relief and you mostly work easy M-F hours. That's not the problem though the real problem is all unions except good one's agree to a bullshit two tier wage system where the boomers get max pay and you have to start out at next to nothing and get a tiny raise every year until you max out. This is a new thing that started around mid 2000s those boomers never had to get paid less doing the same job but now you do
>>536589798I don't get that opportunity retard I am shushed away before they even ask me what the issue is and god forbid you want an inspection done because they make so little on that they always make excuses not to
>>536589664They'll also hire service writers who don't have any mechanical background. They don't know what an alternator is or how much labor is involved in "dropping the drivetrain", they're just phonating syllables on a page that, to them, might as well be in Hungarian.
>me be>tick thread >look a timage>nope.egg>scrol>walloftext>kmsripself
>>536585905nigger STFU nobody has a gf or even just a job to afford a car or home or tools KYS
>>536589900That is a problem because boomers are trying to cock block me from starting a family and having a normal social life. They push a system that as someone previously stated didn't exist when they started and benefits them. Every retail job I had also had shit hours but it was shared. So maybe one day a week I had garbage hours but that was shared with everyone. Kinda retarded how a corporation treated me more fairly than a union did
I drive an EV but still have gas car. I would imagine there will be less need for grease monkeys in the future. I was in a Tesla dealership where they work on cars and it was so clean in there. Of course EVs still need suspension parts, half shafts, tires but you don't have to replace timing belts, alternators, starters, exhaust, fuel systems, etc. I've watched replace battery packs. Seems very simple if you have a lift but probably doable with some good floor jacks--an ev is a high powered golf cart.
>>536589995I wonder if AI will replace shit like this. My cousin is an estimator for a construction company when he explained to me his job I was like there is no way AI won't be replacing him within 5 years
>>536585905That's an ok ratchet but try pic related.
>>536585905Nigga ain’t nobody readin your fuckin manifesto
>>536590151"AI replace X", the answer is almost always no, or no*. AI is fucking awful still, they've got good at dressing the pig up, but you still can't let AI touch anything important.>Setup AI to estimate, and deliver quotes>AI schizos out, and sends a quote that costs the company 100k.>Try to back out of the quote, but existing court precedent is that a chatbot agreeing to a contract is the equivalent of anyone with authority, agreeing to a contract.>Company goes bankrupt.I hope they do it though, 100% going to be a brief cottage industry of jailbreaking AIs into agreeing to ridiculous contracts to steal money from companies legally.
>>536589900Start talking about it more openly. If I do continue in the trade im dropping out to go to school lmao.Get fucking rekt boomer.Legalize pushing boomers who hold out apprenticeships and then say "they can sign off on your hours" when the registration page asks for their journeyman number off the side of buildings. Roundhouse kick boomers who expect you to run non stop all day in the side of a head, stir fry boomers immaculate 1943 Pontiac Coup deFordMustand with a wok.
>>536585905>roboids can build cars>but can't fix them
>>536590473Yea now for sure but I dunno in a couple years with the way things are going you never know.>I hope they do it though, 100% going to be a brief cottage industry of jailbreaking AIs into agreeing to ridiculous contracts to steal money from companies legally.I am pretty sure a client wouldn't directly interact with AI more like fill out paperwork that can be used as input. My cousin just takes numbers given to him and shits out a amount I am shocked software doesn't exist to do this
>>536590151I don't think so. Mechanized production already made tons of jobs "obsolete" so the response was to rig the economy to force people to keep waging. The purpose of digging holes and filling them back in is to keep the employee occupied. AI and robotics will never eliminate a fake job. Otherwise the job wouldn't exist to begin with.
>>536590473>>Try to back out of the quote.I see so many small guys get absolutely destroyed by the "word of mouth" game. >>536585905Organize your sockets to useless nigger.
>>536589995Have you heard them use the phrase "Tools in your toolbox"Ive heard like atleast 8 of them make this analogy over a large geographic area and im curious if its a part of their supervisor education sessions or just an organic catchphrase.
>>536590658Yea I was just googling this turns out software and AI estimators exist but estimators still confirm the numbers they create
>>536585905clean that mess up
>>536590815>Have you heard them use the phrase>"Tools in your toolbox"In what context? Can you give me an example?

>>536590658They already are replacing the jobs though. Constantly and at increasing rates. And we havent even scratched the surface. AI isn't even really "there" yet in terms of job replacement and it's already killing tens of thousands of jobs at month.
>>536585905tl;dr, management has ruined everything.Yes it's true, there were a lot of good jobs, but there is no way I'm giving my neetbux away to do any of them under the modern circumstances. And I have self respect, no one can pay me to do a botch job.
>>536589995Why are so many of them seemingly incapable of simple diagnostic work?I'm not a mechanic, don't know shit about cars but when my car started having the power steering die every time the weather got cold not one of the 4 mechanics I took it to could tell me why. I had the power steering electronics replaced 3 different times and every mechanic claimed they had no idea why it happened I googled it and in 5 minutes learned it was 100% the alternator. This isn't the first time I've had this issue. The only mechanics I trust now are Mexicans that don't speak English.
>>536591125You wont see over 25/hr in the trades anymore.Housing manufacturing has switched to robots and is entirely automated plus their currently building the 4.0 version thats more automated and better. The last bastion and hope is getting a prefab table going and having a truck and gooseneck, or getting a crane ticket before the ladder/oversaturation happens, but the 10k ticket cost keeps everyone out who already isnt one, plus the reality your likely going to have to go to Texas for the advanced training really limits you if you have a colorful past or admit to smoking a Marijuana joint
>>536591112>fall arrest ticketWhat is this?In general yeah it sounds like this is just normie corpospeak language that has caught on in that industry. Like how salesmen will use terms like "value proposition" even though this normally never occurs in normal conversation.
>>536585905It's dog shit work, my instructor at Auto Mechanics College of University said the washout rate is 125% and he wasn't wrong.
Not mentioning competence crisis? Or dei bullshit (graduates!) or new vehicles being pozzed computer systems rife with fiddly electrical bullshit instead of just swapping a component?
>>536591125Your pic shows the opposite? And since most of these went to women, these are mostly going to be fake, adult daycare jobs exactly as I've described. Again the issue isn't that AI can't really replace people (it obviously can, especially as it keeps improving), but that the economy will continue to be structured so that you have to wage to keep you busy so you can't learn, rest, or worst of all, rebel. If Commander Data was invented tomorrow, the powers that be would be (if they weren't using their android army to enslave everyone outright) screeching how work provides "dignity" and "purpose" and how automation needed to be limited to keep work alive. True automation means no more pretext for mass migration, which is another hill they'll die on.
>>536591383If I was 18 I wouldn't even bother. 20 years from now very few people will own cars and we will have like auto driving car subscriptions to just take us everywhere for better or worse. The last pesky step in the way of auto cars is humans driving others cars and all it takes is a single politician to change that
>>536591516Or what about the influx of beaner mechanics and other scammers like Arabs and Indians? The problem with boomer posting on pol is it all sounds so outdated, they aren't capable of creating posts that sound like that aren't compiled from out of date information.

>>536590655>am shocked software doesn't exist to do thisIt exists, but it exists in two forms.>Generic software as a service slop that eats into margins pretty heavy. Charging prices that only make sense for large corporations that can eat the costs.>Bespoke software that got programmed by some random fucker that a small to mid sized company either hired, contracted, or had some intern slap together.I've seen both. One company I know, is using some spaghetti coded VBA enabled spreadsheet to do their estimating. That was the jankiest shit I've ever had to fix, and I'm pretty sure they paid the guy who made it at least 5 figures to make/maintain it until they went old and senile.

>>536586552>reject the [choice]>tell them its their decision to make>somehow this fristrates/stressed him out.I got ran out of the Navy because I dared to remind my chain of command they were in command and had to give me orders, they couldn't just waffle and expect me to read their minds. In fact that's exactly what they wanted me to do, act on my own authority (wrongly) and predict what they would want me to do in the future not only so they wouldn't have to do their own job, but also so that if anything went wrong I would be responsible for acting without orders. Of course if things went right they would get the credit, and they would reward me with a positive evaluation which helps with promotions.I found this incredibly frustrating and it fucked me up mentally because I couldn't just quit. I got fucked over and had to finish out an extra set of orders in the end basically enslaved and even just thinking about it for this post is making me tremble a bit with rage.In the end this is just more evidence of the feminization of the workplace and the rise of bullshit jobs. >>536591298>Why are so many of them seemingly incapable of simple diagnostic work?Actual diagnostic work requires technical and domain knowledge on par with a doctor or lawyer, which is why the *shop rates themselves* are on par with those professions. You have to understand mechanics, electronics, digital logic, and have all the "hands on" skills of physically working with cars and all tools. You can't hire a good automotive diagnostician for $15 or $20 or $30 an hour for the same reason you can't hire a doctor or lawyer for those rates. Until shops provide the pay *and conditions* that can attract people with that level of intellect, the automotive service industry will not improve.>The only mechanics I trust now are Mexicans that don't speak English. This is a meme with an inkling of truth to it but once you hit a problem of certain complexity it's generally outside their league. They're good at "parts changer" type repairs where sheer familiarity with characteristic problems is what counts.
>>536592359I never in my life had a job where the manager managed. Never. I prefer it this way and usually do a good job where I don't need to be managed but at the same time I never got a management promotion myself so I am what you call a good goy
>>536585905Auto tech here of 7 years.I make 38\hr flat rate turning 50 hours of labor in a 40 hour week, in one of the cheapest cities in the country. A year ago I was making 40k a year, but I found out shops are willing to pay a good tech pretty much whatever they want.
>>536592375>automotive service industry will not improve.I think you could make a very very strong argument that what you just described is a symptom of the auto industry fucking up their car designs intentionally. Not some inherently insurmountable problem. If the car companies would start prioritizing good engineering, and specifically, repairability/durability, you wouldn't need these ridiculous rocket scientist level repair tech positions at all.But they're like any other industry, prioritizing profits instead of good product. They COULD design a headlight that the end user could easily swap out for a cheap replacement, but they'd rather design it in a way that is almost impossible to replace without tearing half of the engine bay out, AND use a bespoke part on every single model, so the part is also expensive. If they're really being kikes, they serialize the parts, and have them refuse to work if the central kike-o-tron onboard computer decides it's not a verified part.In a just world, that sort of parasitic behavior would lead to the legally mandated execution of their entire family line, to ensure it was rooted out of the gene pool, but here we are, buying ever more expensive products that are also inferior to shit several decades ago.

>>536592773Yeah designing cars to make repairs expensive is 100% intentional. This will not change without right to repair laws. Most people don't realize that car dealerships sometimes only break even on new car sales. I think the highest average in the country a few years ago was CarMax at like 15% margin. Dealerships depend on repairs and F&I for essentially all of their money. If cars are easy to fix, there goes the repair revenue. From that book I posted earlier:> "GM designer Harley Earl said in the 1950s, My job is to hasten obsolescence. I’ve got it down to two years; now when I get it down to one year, I’ll have a perfect score."Mechanics also get shafted here because of "book time". Let's say the standard repair time for a job is 7 hours, but some ingenious mechanic finds a new technique that takes 1 hour. The dealership/alldata/promaster will just update the book time to 1 hour. The mechanics gets paid his hour, then goes on to do 6 hours on the next job; the dealer makes the same profit margin hourly. There is no incentive for efficiency.

>>536593363>Which to be fair boomers do have something wrong with them preventing googling and everyone I saw fail to explain an issue I found in minutes on google was a boomerYeah this is 100% real. I've seen management boomers scream at techs for "looking things up" because they should already "know how to do their job". They are unteachable hylics and should be expelled from the economy, have their capital expropriated and never entrusted with power to the slightest degree.
>>536585905This is not a problem for consumer vehicles, eventually everything will be electric with few moving parts and the electronic stuff will be plug and play /disposable. Also if you bring back manufacturing and flood the country with production like china does then you can simply make the entire vehicle disposable or on a system where you don't even own it, it just goes back to the factory and you swap it out with another one like a propane tank. Not saying this is good, but it's not a real problem. Now the issue of useless productivity where people drive around and go to work and waste their time to produce vehicles that are only used for driving around and going to work is a far greater problem for society to tackle.

>>536587151>I worked as a mechanic apprentice for freeWhen you were young and stupid.
>>536585905Good post but id add onto the pay portion: the issues with flat rate. Unless you're the chosen few who get the gravy jobs from management or a shit ton of pre-delivery inspections, few have a higher ratio of billable hours/works worked. Plus there's always slow periods where no one makes 40 hours a week. Personally I averaged $10/hour under the flat rate system as a flat rate mechanic and quit. Now in my other career I have 3 guys working for me that were 3rd or 4th year apprentices and either didn't like it ir can't find a job as a mechanic. Which is odd because if the industry is so desperate, then why are they not being hired?Simple: no shop wants to train apprentices because of the lack of loyalty and mechanics don't want to train apprentices because there's no pay incentive for them to train these kids. Why would a mechanic take time out of his day to walk a tire jockey or lube monkey through tracing an electrical short when he's got a car on the lift? If shops paid mechanics a percentage of the total work their ASSIGNED apprentice performed, it would fix the loyalty problem and create more effective future mechanics instead of 4th year apprentices swimming in tool debt.

>>536586958I'll happily pay my guys $50/hr, and they deserve it. But my labor rate would have to go up to $250/hr and no one's going to pay that. People already bitch about $100 oil changes. There's always some buddy who'll fix it for $50 and a sixpack, and then shrug when it doesn't fix the problem. I'm not touching that mess or that customer. Once you get 3 to 5 years in, the skillset sort of tops out. There's always something to learn, especially with the technology in the cars changing as much as it is, but you have 90% of the skills you will ever need. So the pay sort of tops out too. The only way to make more is to go flat rate and take the jobs where you can beat book time. Or go into management or sales. I do believe in paying for their time. But it seems like it's feast or famine, so it swings between watching customers go away or watching the guys polish their tools. Scheduling is a bitch and hurts payroll, but at least I have enough loyal customers that are willing to wait a few days instead of going down the road. With everything computerized, you're getting into electrical diagnostics more, which sucks ass as bad as it ever has. Customer isn't going to pay you for the three hours is took to find an abraded wire in the engine harness. Or enough to justify the $15000/yr you spend on the equipment to program a new computer module. Because the guy at Autozone hooked up a scanner and gave a generic recommendation, it only took five minutes to misdiagnose the problem, why should I pay $150 for diagnostics? There's always been that subset of customers that run a car for 50k to 80k miles then trade it in, most likely going see more of that.Anyways, thanks for reading my blog.
