It was slightly more common in Scotland but largely it was the preserve of the aristocracy and land owning families that were in possession of titles. as someone belonging to an upper class Catholic family (relatively small demographic) the closest "sketchy" marriage in the family would have been someone marrying a second cousin in the 1700s.
