I'm an American tourist in Rome right now and this whole trip has been a massive disappointment. Saved up for years thinking I was gonna see the glory of ancient Rome and real Western culture. Instead it's been nothing but scams, rudeness and overpriced shit.The airport is a mess, hotels are run by foreigners charging crazy prices, the food is average at best, and the locals are rude, smell like cigarettes and clearly hate tourists. But the biggest letdown is the Colosseum.I went there expecting to be blown away by real Roman history. Instead it's a half-crumbled pile of rocks covered in scaffolding. A huge part of it looks like it was rebuilt recently. After looking it up, I realized most of the structure was heavily restored, especially after WWII. Now I'm genuinely starting to think large sections of it are completely fake - modern reconstructions pretending to be ancient.The more I think about it, the more the whole "Italian culture" feels like a LARP. They lost their empire, got invaded and ruled by foreigners for centuries, and now their capital is turning into a third world dump while they cosplay as Romans. How much of this ancient Roman legacy is even real and not just exaggerated tourist propaganda?Rome feels like a Disney theme park built on fake history. Complete tourist trap. Never coming back.

Remember visiting Rome in 2010. I liked it. The Vatican was very interesting if very busy. Maybe immigration was not so common back then in Italy. Saw mostly Italians I think. Seemed fine. Nice pizza. Some interesting buildings and churches. Sistine chapel was cool. If you are used to American style customer service where they treat the customer like a god then most places in Europe will seem rude.
