Mammals are usually at the top of the food chain so ecosystems can't really support a lot of them. Imagine something like thousands of lions that live inside the area of a city that need to eat daily. At most in reality you'll find maybe 10-15 lions in such an area. Likewise, globally, humans would have a population cap of 10,000 max if humans didn't bypass nature's carrying capacity with technology like agriculture.
