yikes. 42 trips?! I dont even think I've been inside a home depot that many times and im 42 years old. When you first start a garden it can be expensive to start but once it's going it's going. You can cut clones to propagate, use trimmings and defoliation for composting, and depending on where you live watering might be free or a simple task of creating a rain trap or irrigation system. You're not going to start a commercial operation in your backyard garden but it can supplement a large chunk of your food. Even my great grandmother, who lived in the ghetto with basically a 8'x8' yard, would stack old trashed tires and flll them with dirt to grow potatoes inside.You can also grow other shit like cannabis. I started growing my own once it became 100% legal in my state and that shit saves me like $200/month that i was otherwise pissing away on buying it.

Economies of scale mean you'll always end up wasting more time and energy with your own garden compared to just buying stuff at the store.Of course there are some exceptions to this.
