When that happens they don't have the ability to look at the word, break it down, and figure out how to easily pronounce it.And then on top of that, there's the simple fact that each generation is browner than the last. That means lower IQ and having parents from non-english-speaking backgrounds who can't help their kids read at home

Poems and anything else that use subtext are basically impossible for zoomers to grasp. They also seem to struggle a lot more with picturing descriptions in their mind. Like they can read the description and understand it logically, but they fail to actually picture the scene in their head and get confused and lost if you add a new character or something happens to change the scene.I think there is more than just the phonetics thing, there is something deeper going on with how English is taught that is making Zoomers/younger people incapable of reading and understanding anything that isn't a technical document. I know plenty of zoomers that can read complex instructions and follow them, but you give that same Zoomer a novel and they look at you like an alien. They will read the text word for word, and yet completely fail to grasp the meaning at all, or to even picture the scenes as described.

It can therefore be inferred that speech has existed in various forms for tens of millions of years at least, plenty of time for an instinct to develop.Writing, by contrast, is unique to humanity and has only existed for about 6000-7000 years, which in evolutionary terms is last Tuesday. Nowhere near enough time to develop an instinct for it.
