Germany and Nationalist China had a military partnership during the 20s and even through most of the 1930s, but after the Sino-Japanese war started Hitler shifted his position in favor of Japan. He probably viewed the Japanese as a stronger power who would be of more value when fighting against the Allies and the Soviets.Hitler's assumption turned out to be false. Not only did Japan fail to defeat China, but they did not assist against the Soviets at all, and instead they awakened a "Sleeping Giant" by attacking Pearl Harbor and dragging the USA into the war. For all these reasons, Hitler forming an alliance with the Japanese was probably his greatest blunder. Everyone speaks about how terrible the Italians were for the Axis, but I'd argue that Japan was even worse for the reasons I just mentioned.But what if Hitler had stayed the course and maintained the alliance with Nationalist China instead? Japan was unable to conquer them even with German support being severed, so with German support continuing the Nationalists should have been even stronger and probably would have been able to drive the Japanese out entirely. At that point, Nationalist Chinese assistance against the Soviet Union would have been on the table. Everyone talks about how enormous the Soviet Union's manpower was, but it is nothing in comparison to the amount of manpower that China had. Combine that nearly limitless Chinese manpower with German equipment and training and the Soviets would have been fucked.Moreover, the British also would have been fucked, because don't forget that China borders the British Raj. The Japanese tried and failed to invade India in 1944, but where the Japanese failed, the Nationalist Chinese would have succeeded.Again I say, Hitler would have won the war if he would have kept his Chinese ally instead of betraying them in favor of a worse one.
