I'm tired of hearing how this little event somehow set an entire generation of young people back in a huge way. I dropped out of high school and spent ages 14 to 24 in a basement playing video games with no learning or human interaction. Still managed to start a family and own a home.

Bullshit. No state in the US allows dropout until age 16, maybe 15 with special circumstances and parental permission.

Not bullshit at all. I did get pushed through to 10th grade despite going to school like 10 times in 9th grade. My parents got letters for possible court. I did have to go with my mom when I was 8 or 9 where they could have taken me from her for not going to school though but they didn't.
