I ran away when I was a young teen. Up until then, the town I lived in was like a stereotypical rural paradise. People knew each other, there was a healthy community around the church, around the historical society, the civic association, and the school. It literally was one of those "we don't lock our doors" places. I remember once having to escape to a friend's house at midnight and the door was unlocked. We had festivals where I would spend hours chasing my friends around, wholly unsupervised, for hours. I never lacked for other friends to explore and play with.About a year ago I returned for the first time since I ran away to talk with the guy who bought my old home. I stayed with a neighbor and old friend. During this time, I walked around and talked with people a lot. At this point, all, and I mean *all* of the old social institutions are dead. The church has shrunk to about a dozen old people, the historical society is defunct, the youngest civic association member is in his 60s. And the festivals no longer happen. And most weird of all, the only children I saw were Mexicans.Developers managed to get their shoe in the door when I was 10, but it was only minimally intrusive then. In just over a decade, these slimy scum set up disgusting apartment complexes and they began trucking in Mexicans and Asians. McMansions started going up and the youth left for far away cities. I swung around the school and looked at the photos of kids on the wall. It's not all Mexican yet, but it is like America no-clipped into Mexico. Ugly brown potatoes everywhere. People who used to know EVERYONE told me that they hadn't even talked with the Koreans across the street. No one talks with each other at all and it's safe to say that this place is no longer a town, but just a zone where atomized individuals live in isolated houses. I probably couldn't do half of the things I did as a kid and that infuriates me to no end.Multi-culturalism destroyed my beautiful town.
