You can have bad starting situations and end up not poor. You will never be rich if you start poor though. I was kicked out at 18 and had zero financial literacy. My parents were in debt until I was 14 not counting mortgage. Yet too prideful to accept assistance programs because "there are people worse off". That upbringing made me just fearful of what I do not financially understand and I did not have a credit card until I was 28. It also made me retarded in term of investing and I didn't start until I was 27. First off when it comes to things like paying for property taxes, maintenance, repairs, and insurance, renters pay for all of that. *Renters are also paying the interest on a mortgage, their landlord's mortgage.* They're just paying for it through their rent. The difference is that once they've paid for it they don't even get anything. The worst part is that if you're in a collective renting situation like an apartment building, you're actually paying for *someone else's* repairs and maintenance.

Second, you need some place to live. Over the course of 30 years you'll probably spend close to $2 million on either rent or a mortgage. I suppose if you couch surfed the rest of your life you could just put that in the stock market and make a huge amount of money. But that's not really feasible.

A renter who spends $2 million on rent over the course of 30 years at the end will have $0. A home buyer who pays $2 million into mortgage on a home that loses half it's value *will still be ahead of the renter.* And in most cases he's not going to lose half the value of his home. Unless he buys his house in some place like Detroit, his house will gain a compounding 4% in value every year. And while the renters rent will go up every year the maximum legal amount, a fixed mortgage will always remain the same.
