I personally have never seen it. Worst I have seen were cats in cages, but they seemed to be taken good care of and very unlikely meant for eating. That was in one of the major southern cities too, so I very much doubt that was the case. I suppose things like that may happen in rural areas, but I have little experience outside Tier 1-3 cities.

When it comes to other stereotypes - some of them are true, but blown out of proportions, at least when it comes to non-rural areas. I would not call Chhinese loud, but they can behave in ways that would be inappropriate in Europe. Like making some loud burping sounds or walking wih their bellies out when its really hot. I got used to everything but smoking in restaurants, that is very uncomfirtable. Also never quite felt that the bad driving stereotype is true - in Beijing they drive perfectly. In the rest of the country its less orderly, but also quite good.
