If I had a family, I'd care. I mostly view people who cling to life like this as embarrassing. It will probably never happen, and if it does, who fucking cares. Life isn't so great that I'd spend all of that energy worrying about how I'm going to cling to it in some fictional unlikely collapse scenario. The irony is many of these neurotic preppers wouldn't survive anyway. I think it's smart having buncha consumables, some tools and equipment, solar panels and a battery, just so you could reasonably comfortably survive some small temporary crisis but I'm stacking metal, stocks and bonds too so that I can just fuck off somewhere else easily if things get really bad.

The other problem with that sort of stuff is you won't want to eat it, so you won't be checking it, and rotating it. You might learn that your canning skills aren't quite up to snuff at the worst possible time. Sure if you think everyone is going to die in the next month debt max on as much of this sort of stuff as you can, but being a hobo if the world ends in two months isn't a great place to be.
