To be fair the situation in the 70s when Republicanism was its peak was way different. I think it's a bit disingenuous to use a context from 50-60 years as a basis for judgement. There weren't hordes of shitskins in the UK and definitely not the Republic of Ireland back then and so you can see why they sought solidarity with other anti imperialist movements the majority of which were in non European countries. They had tight links with ETA too, and ethnic Basques are as white as you can get. A lot of the IRA back then were conservative Catholics, many of whom would roll in their graves at whats happening in modern Ireland and Europe as a whole.
