In 1812 in Upper Canada (Ontario) most the the settlers in the south were recent Americans immigrants, drawn in by cheap land since in the US the oligarchs of the Revolution paid themselves for their services in all the available land so basically none available affordably to upstart farmers anywhere in the Midwest except for southern Ontario. US assumed they would naturally sympathize with the US where they'd recent emigrated, but besides the fact that they left to escape the corruption and self dealing, the US said anyone effectively fighting alongside a native(Indian) was liable for execution, when this basically made all militiamen in Canada which at the time was basically all men subject to summary execution because the Americans were so paranoid and racist, hardened resolve to resist and they did so successfully.Parallels with Ukraine though... I can remember when there were very very early on protests in occupied cities against Russian occupation and Russia put up with it for a few days and then cracked down.
