After that there was a series of long wars between Duchy of Moscow and the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, really Poland, then a powerful state over control of some of these western areas of Rus. What is now southern Ukraine was settled by Cossacks, who were basically Russian cowboys AFTER the time of Kievan Rus. This was taken from the Ottomans, who pushed into the region. This will explain "New Russia" and the fact places like Odessa were largely people from what we refer to as Russia proper.The real thing that happened is the Ukrainian movement in the late 19th century which correlated with modernization, the first education, serf emancipation, many things at once. That's how it spread, it was a peasant movement sponsored by Austria Hungary and the local ruling Poles to retain the are and prevent it from returning to the Russian Empire Pre WW1. The more educated clerical classes tended to be pro-Russia with "back-immigration". Ukrainianism also spread with communism.
