If you are in the 70cm band or 2 meter band (most common for handheld radios), you won't get further than maybe a mile, unless you stand on a big hill. It works like line of sight on those bands. If shtf, repeaters would probably go down after the battery backups run out, leaving you with a very short-range radio. Baofeng doesn't follow the laws and might have other bands on their handheld. You will get a lot further range on the longer wavelength bands.Simply calling on a random frequency won't work. Someone else has to know where to find you. So, buy or print out a band allocation chart. It will show you what frequencies people will likely be on. Pic rel is for the US. And each state can also have slightly different plans from the national ARRL plan. So, I assume each country in Europe has a slightly different plan as well.
