Is everyone stupid or am i dunning-krooger? Or something inbetween?
>>536898452the problem is what you consider stupid or smart is based on a pixel when it is more like a voxel
>>536898598i dont know what either of those words mean but it sounds right
>>536899229A voxel is a volumetric pixel it's a portmanteau.
>>536899297Then what does the extra dimension of intelligence represent? Also whats a portamanure
>>53689845295% of the time people invoking the Dunning-Kruger effect is itself an example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. It doesn't mean "dumb people tend to think they're smarter than they really are", it means people with low ability in a specific skill tend to overestimate their aptitude at it. So people invoke it thinking "oh look at me I know psychology" when in reality they don't know what they're talking about
No worries about Dunning-Kruger. You're just retarded!
>>536898452People tend to be abysmal at seeing their own ego clearly so everyone sort of appears retarded from the outside.
>>536899447So it's a case of you don't know how much you don't know?
>>536899380A portmanteau is when you smash two words together to make a new word. Like the word "dogger" it actually means dog-nigger.But as far as pixels and voxels in relation to intelligence I don't wtf that nigger was talking about.
bumo
>>536898452no they're smarter than you they just aren't spergs
>>536900597Oh i get it, i think he meant that intelligence is non-linear so at times a drooling imbecile could be more intelligent in some ways than a rocket scientist, I wanted to know if he had a metric for that extra dimension of intelligence.
>>536900721Perhaps.
>>536898452yes, people are dumb on averagebut its not their faultlook at social norms and popular cultureits a pretty low barand everyone is just struggling to figure out how to surviveso chances are you are probably smarter than the average personif you have even heard about dunning kreuger effecteven your average “highly educated person”is completely retarded about most thingscould you really consider that intelligent?
>>536899447dunning kruger effect means dumb people tend to overestimate their abilities and smart people tend to under estimate their abilities. People always forget about the second part for some reason.
>>536898452Probably both. People really are stupid, but sometimes you're just DKing. The ratio of which is IQ dependent.
>>536898452it's because this site's been overrun by homosexuals, brownoids and bots, please be advised
>>536898452The smarter you are, the more you realize what you don't know far exceeds what you do know, and generally, you speak less and listen more.In short: loud, boisterous people are generally fucking retarded.
>>536901658and a quiet overeducated person might be calm and eruditebut everything they “know” is insanethese nuances matterusually this same type of person is very highly educated or has some position of power
>>536901658But how do you know how intelligent you are? Everyone says this is stupid that is amrt but they never define it.
>>536901923it all goes back to making arguments and having respect for philosophical rules of engagementyoull notice dumb people always appeal to credentials or formsmart people just say shit that makes you think
>>536898452Well everyone is retarded (me2 ofc) except for a few people. And humanity has been carried by geniuses for the most part
Ah yes le heckin Dooning Krooger effectNormies love to use that term online.
>>536898452If you have 1q5 IQ, 68% of people are dumber than you.Of important note, this is from a time when the average was fixed to a white, population with some education.Currently, most of the country is below 100 IQ, perhaps more than two thirds. Even a perfectly average white man probably encounters more people that are dumber than him than smarter. Also, DKE is meme reddit shit, it’s a descriptor, not any sort of weight to it.
>>536902019That makes sense, then intelligence would be a level of understanding of reality, but understanding is always incomplete, and everyone has some understanding of nature, the question would be is there an objective base level of understanding from which you can measure the levels above that, or is understanding completely relative, I lean towards it being relative.
>>536902226>DKE is meme reddit shit, it’s a descriptor, not any sort of weight to it. Redditors & Discord users love to use the DKE thinking "look at me I know psychology, im very smart"
>>536901540Wrong.>>536899447 is right
>>536902098I'm krooging.
>>536902404Muh heckin dooning krooger guys I know psychology im so le heckin smart!!!!!!
>>536902323its all of that, which is what separates truly intelligent people from well trained ones(truly intelligent = higher baseline and appropriate usage)most people attribute training or status to intelligencebut seeing people with status being retards demonstrates thatthese arent perfectly linearly correlatedthe “understanding” is always relative and subjectivebecause a biased agent is experiencing it/generating ithowever, the nature of “intelligence” is that it can be “self editing”to an extent, in that one can scrutinize themselves and not just take their instincts for granted so to speakand then you have the limits of language and transferring informationthen, what we perceive as “intelligent”is probably the result of multiple factors acting in confluencesome of which we wouldnt traditionally ascribe to individual intelligencelike bodily safety for exampleso its indeed a very complex subjectbut to keep it simple, people subsitituting form or credentialsfor making actual arguments or actually being able to use words to describe what they are thinkingis a strong indicator of lack of intelligence, independent of statusbecause despite their training, its not correctly appliedtherefore they have low intelligence as intelligence respectsthe philosophical rules of engagementand appeals to authority are categorical fallacies
>>536902493I-IMGONNAAAKROOOOG AAAAAAAAAAA
>>536902709NOOOO!!!11!!1!11
>>536902682Yeah, people that are "smart" often fall for credentialism & educationism & expertism, all of which are appeal to authority.
>>536902848A common example is looking down on someone with less education.
>>536902848absolutely>>536902904or just dismissing someone as fundamentally not crediblebecause they dont have a college degreemy own family members denigrate each other for thisits bizarre.im like isnt phil 101 a requirement for you lot?! lol
>>536903224It is better to be an autodidact for certain thingsCurrently teaching myself philosophy
>>536902682But sometimes instincts can be more accurate than cognition, so i don't see how you would give intelligence an objective metric, it seems completely relative.
>>536898452You tend to pay attention only to things your mind is proficient in. So you're likely to perceive yourself as more intelligent/competent in the things you pay attention to. A chiropractor walking past you will probably think you're a retard because of your posture. A salesperson will probably think you're a retard in terms of your communication skills. A statistician will probably think you're a retard by some of the decisions you subconsciously make.Put it this way: most people think most people are dumber than them.
>>536898452You're somewhere in-between. There are genuinely intelligent people, much smarter than you in the world that keep things running, but most of the people you interact with on a daily basis are retarded. Why that is, I don't know.
>>536903571>You tend to pay attention only to things your mind is proficient in.That's a very interesting point, if you are a generalist, you will see more people as slightly dumber, but if you are hyperspecialized you will only see some people as extremely stupid, but in both cases your mind is cherry picking what you do know rather than what you don't know. It seems that knowledge and intelligence itself is deceptive, how strange.
>>536903415nice. a philosophy education is a strong foundationyou will be intellectually formidable by training yourself on philosophical principles>>536903527right, earlier in the thread i said something similarwith the calm well spoken person not necessarily being intelligentthis is complicatedbut there are indicators that are obviousand some things are just blatant rule violationsmaking them invalid arguments and just dismissable on that basis alonefor examplesomeone’s core premise might be to insinuate that you are a loserhowever, this is a category erroron multiple frontstherefore their statement can just be discarded as it holds no weight
>>536903830Yeah, interesting fact: your brain ignores over 99% of all incoming sensory data. The tiny fraction of stuff your brain actively processes are stuff that you personally consider important, i.e. your brain filters information in accordance with your personal beliefs and values. For example, if I gave you an RGB color picker to select the color of your curtains, you almost certainly won't be able to get within 10% margin of error (unless they're solid black or white), even though you see your curtains literally every single day. Yet an interior designer would probably be able to get the color accurately (and probably even known the specific name of the color/tone) by simply glancing at your room. The interior designer, if lacking in wisdom, would probably assume you're retarded even if you're highly proficient in other areas.
>>536903415Based, the nice thing about philosophy is you can start wherever you want, and as you progress it leads into real areas of practical skills which if you are interested in you can then pursue outside of philosophy, there are only a few basic definitions and words that are useful to learn like ontology, metaphysics, ethics, but after that it's almost entirely conceptual, I think they don't teach it anymore because it enhances your skills and usually discourages cognitive dissonance. Philosophy can drive you insane though, so it's always important for it to be subservient to reality and real life and not the other way around, then it's very fun and you can play with ideas rather than accepting them all dogmatically, and gain some kind of insight into the world.
>>536904131It is complicated, but I think you are actually making a category error by conflating intelligence with pure logic and reason, I think it's more broad than that.
>>536902332My favorite is using it in lieu of an argument.>I can’t articulate why I disagree and you are suffering from a thing where you feel overconfident about your opinion. I think if you knew all the things I can’t articulate, you would agree with meReally impressive stuff.
>>536904271Amazing isn't it, even more interestingly, when you get really good at something, you dont even need to think about what youre doing anymore, in fact the brain is constantly taking in vast amounts of data, so maybe that 99% of information isn't actually being ignored, it's just what we call intuition from countless previous life experiences.
>>536904639i dont think i did that
>>536898452>Is everyone stupidyes> am i dunning-krooger?yes
>>536904913Well your point was more that a fallacy isnt logical, but i was more asking about broader intelligence in general.
>>536904946Thank you you just finally answered my question lol. Very well said.
>>536905079i think my point was more complicated than thatbut lets leave it at thati dont have the the energy put enough content in your thread
>>536905141Very well, thanks for the conversation.
