SBRs and AR pistols pretty much mog every other weapon in existence. They’re small enough to be convenient but the range and accuracy makes them superior to a pistol or a shotgun. A shotgun is good for breaching and I guess maybe these days drone defense but that’s pretty much it. I haven’t looked into its effectiveness in trenches in Ukraine but I’d assume it’s inferior to modern automatic rifles. Pistols are good for concealed carry but that’s pretty much it. The only advantage a pistol has over a rifle is its concealability.

>>536996434I think there's an argument now that for the average civvie, a shotgun should be their long gun of choice. A carbine is an objectively superior choice for fighting people as it has better range and better capacity, but fighting people in a context where those are huge bonuses really depends on being part of a squad. If your post-apocalypse plan mainly involves personal defense while you wander around or shelter in place primarily as an individual, a shotgun covers more uses while still being kinda effective at what the carbine does for you. You can use slugs to get out to 100 yards at least, which is long enough for any self-defense application, while also being usable against drones and much more effective in hunting, which you may need to do for food. Shotgun ammo is at least as plentiful as 5.56 so scavenging rounds still works. You can fend off a horde of unarmored peaceful protestors with a shotgun about as well as anything else.Even if you are going to use a rifle, again for a civvie without a big military support structure or even a small one, the better rifle is going to be more DMR/sniper focused. You don't want to be getting into prolonged close-in firefights by yourself. The kind of firefight you can win is the one where you fire a few times at really long standoff and then fuck off back into the woods. For that a bolt action with a big boy caliber will probably be better, and that'll also be better for hunting than a carbine.And I wouldn't look down my nose at pistols. Again for the lone civvie, or one with a family in tow, you may get far more benefit out of not being visibly armed than you would get out of the increased lethality of a carbine - and again, a pistol defends a home nearly as well as a rifle does when facing unarmored opponents.
