>>537035934It's got about 2/3rds the energy density so you've got to burn more to get the same results. A quick check tells me that 1 Bushel of corn will yield roughly 2.8 gallons. India in total produced 37.1 mil tons of corn if we assume all of that goes into Ethanol, and corn is turned into ethanol relatively efficiently that would equate to around 88mil barrels of Ethanol per year. India currently consumes around 5.6mil barrels of oil per day (though only 2.25mil of that is on travel). factor in that it's 66% as effective you will need around 3.4mil barrels of ethanol per day. TLDR: India's yearly corn production if it went 100% into ethanol would tide them over for a little under 1 month (25 days) they can obviously by more from overseas though and i'm sure US farmers will be happy with this.

It's basically using 1 joule worth of oil, some land, some time and some industry to get 1 joule worth of ethanol back.The only reason, and it absolutely the only reason, America uses corn for ethanol is because of the corn lobby.Sugarcane to ethanol is far more effective and has an EROI high enough that it can actually be considered as a valid but expensive petrol alternative in times of crisis.If corn was used to do the same the nation doing it would just collapse more quickly, it's only feasible for as long as an excess of oil is available to sustain the corn to oil pipeline.
