The first three and a half years of the war, they never did this. Then the US did it about 6 months ago, everyone watched Russia do nothing, and then others started doing it too. The humiliation with the Russian sub that was sent to "escort" that tanker and then just watched as it was seized by the US coast guard...that's what really kicked it into high gear. Now the world has realized that Russian shadow fleet tankers are free and you just seize them and no one can do shit lmao.

If you observe this entire war, Russia has always been escalating only in response to an escalation by the west or by Ukraine. There hasn't yet been a single unilateral escalation by Russia that wasn't a response to something. Which is exactly Putin's MOBut I suppose if sufficient amount of ships start getting seized to a degree where it begins posing a threat to Russia, we will likely see real counter-measures being deployed.
