Even a relatively poor shithole given a decade to prepare can manage to create deterrence. Especially if they have strategic depth, which Iran does both in terms of manpower and terrain. Most of Iraq is open and flat and the USA outnumbered it 10:1 while we outnumber Iran ~3:1. It's just a good thing that this was resolved without getting into a land war in Asia.
In a 80s/90s/00s world the US would have just carpet bombed Iran into the ground but realistically every world leader is afraid of bad PR these days.
