Skyscrapers just aren't that smart I think. Difficult to build, difficult to maintain, difficult to keep profitable. They're really built as status symbols first and then someone figures out how to make the finances work later. Even then they only work in dense urban centers, and who (with money) wants to be in one of those in America today?

There's also the fact every floor needs power and water, so you've gotta run pipes and conduit, pumps to get the water above the 4th floor, express elevators for every 15-20 floors....
