Most of the bad things attributed to Stalin happened because Stalin ran the USSR to withstand foreign invasion, rather than to maximize the short-term quality of life of the people. It's crude, but it was better than the alternative of a happy and peaceful country that gets completely destroyed by it's enemies.

The reason why communism doesn't work is because it's rooted to this philosophy stuff that was brewing in Eastern Europe back in the early 20th century. It's not rooted to science, logic, reason....etc. Collectivist solutions CAN work pretty well if they're done under the aegis of rational thinking, rather than ideological thinking. China is proving this pretty well. Sure China has the classic communist problem of wasting boatloads of resources on a whim. But they study things, they act in accordance with data. They don't have a lot of the problems the west has, like mass immigration, corporate oligarchy, debt...etc.
