Overextending themselves with significant leeway given to frontline officers was how they delivered the knockout blow to France. Those tanks were way ahead of where they should have been. If Hitler had not delayed Barbarossa, or if Hitler had focused on driving hard for Moscow instead of diverting south, or if Stalin had not refused evacuation to keep Moscow under control, it really easily could have gone much worse for the Soviets because blitzkrieg was very effective at the time. However once the Battle of Moscow was won by the defenders it was over for the invaders. Everything after that was just stubborn refusal to accept the results of the gambit.
