The pyramids were cool to see, but next to them is a restaurant with bugs crawling across the floor and trash packed 9-feet high outside. It's the same in the entire city. Cairo is pretty gross and people are packed in everywhere. Even in the South near Luxor, they have some decent farmland, but people refuse to manage their trash. So you have this beautiful land, on a beautiful river, near megalithic ruins that is basically one big garbage dump. The only saving grace is Egyptians shit inside instead of on the streets like jeets. After experiencing Egypt, you realize the people that live there now are not genetically the same people who built the pyramids. Someone that can't manage basic trash collection isn't moving 200,000 lb blocks of granite 600 km.

>>537182207If you just see the Pyramids from the distance, it can be underwhelming. If you spend about day there and pay for a guided tour, you see the cooler stuff. It's not like the West where a service is as advertised. You have to barter and plan ahead and bribe your tour guide. It's also a lot of walking and you really need to see them up close. Sphinx was small, but up close you can see the manhole on top of its head and the window wells at the base. It's legit hollow and some kind of tunnel is under it.

The high end hotels are still kind of dumps, but they at least adhere to Western cooking and sanitation standards and are clean. Find a decent hotel (I'd recommend staying anywhere other than Cairo) and take day trips to the pyramids or Luxor.

With modern travel, most harmful diseases are everywhere. The same diseases exist in Egypt as should exist in New York City. The difference is in sanitation. If you are capable of treating sewage and removing trash, diseases don't have the opportunity to grow and spread. And if you have basic cooking sanitation and don't buy raw meat from an open-air market in 100-degree heat, you also don't get food poisoning.
